To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PATRICK J; MADDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the County of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water- Closets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,which are made a part hereof, and in which- Io Figures l and 2 'are respectively a side and a rear elevation of the upper portion of the bowl of a water-closet embodying the invention. The present invention relates to that class ze of water-closets in which the seat (or lid, or both seat and lid) is attached directly to the bowl; and the object of the invention is to provide an improved attaching device. To this end the invention consists in the features 2 5 of novelty that are particularly pointed out in the claims hereinafter.

In the drawings, A represents a portion of the bowl,and a an enlargement thereof,which, as shown, takes the form of a heavy rib or flange extending horizontally across its back; but the shape of this enlargement is not an essential feature of the present invention. Its only object is to insure sufficient strength at the points which receive the strain from the attaching devices. It is a mere thickening of the top of the bowl, and in the following specification it will not be treated as a distinct feature.

Referring to Fig. 3, A represents a portion of the bowl, having a socket comprising a branch B,opening at the back of the bowl,and a branch O D, opening at the side thereof and intersecting the branch B. E is a part, hereinafter called an anchor, located in the branch B, and F is a screw-bolt or similar device occupying the branch C D and passing through an eye formed through the anchor. Preferably that portion of the screwbolt which occupies the eye of the anchor is 5o threaded and engages corresponding threads in the eye; but I desire to have it understood that in its broadest aspect my invention is not limited to this construction, and in Fig. 4 a different construction is shown. Here the bolt is threaded only at its end, and upon it fits a nut F', which occupies a socket G, which is formed in the back of the bowl and with which the branch D' (corresponding to the branch D of Fig. 3) communicates.

Referring to Fig. 3, H and I represent elas- 6o tic sleeves orbuffers, which iit upon the portions f and f of the bolt and iill the branch C D. The anchor has a stem J, provided with threads `which engage corresponding threads in a socket j, which is formed in the end of a bracket-arm J', the end of which is sufficiently large to span the open end of the socket. As shown in Fig. 4 this bracket bears immediately against the bowl; but as shown in Fig. 3 it bears upon it through the 7o medium of an elastic buffer K. The end of the bracket is provided with a depression f2, of somewhat greater diameter than the socket, and in this depression iits the buffer K, which is of greater diameter than the socket, so that 7 5 its margin rests upon the margin of the socket and is compresssd between the bracket and bowl when the bracket is rotated in the proper direction. I desire to have it understood, however, that in its broadest aspect my in- 8o vention is not limited to these elastic buffers H, I, and K, and in some instances they may, if desired, be dispensed with. They are, however, highly desirable when the bowl is of earthenware, as they make a yielding connec- 8 5 tion and relieve the bowl of very much of the strain and concussion that would inevitably come upon it if they were omitted, and to provide a more perfect device for attaching the seats or lids to bowls of vthis class is one 9o of the principal objects of the invention.

The construction above described is duplicated upon opposite sides of the bowl, as shown in Fig. 2. To the seat L are secured a pair of arms M, having at their extremities eyes m, 9 5 and to the lid N are secured a pair of arms O having at their extremities eyes o, said arms being so located that the eyes J 2 of the bracketarms and the eyes m and o of the arms M and O come together end to end in sets of three, Ioe

so that a bolt P may be passed through each set, and thus the several arms are hinged together.

Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination with a bowl, of a pair of rotatively attached brackets, said brackets being detachable only by rotating them, and a seat hinged to the brackets and normally preventing their rotation, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination with a seat and b'owl having a socket, of an anchor secured in said socket, a bracket adapted to bear upon the bowl and having rotative engagement with the anchor, said anchor and bracket having engaging threads, so that by rotating the bracket it may be brought to bear upon the bowl, and a seat hinged to the bracket and preventing its rotation substantially as set forth.

3. The combination with a bowl having two sockets, of two anchors iittin g in said sockets, two brackets having rotative engagement with the anchors and adapted to bear upon the bowl, the anchors and brackets having en gaging screw threads, so that by rotating the brackets they may be brought to bear upon the bowl and the bowl thereby clamped between them and the anchors, and a seat hinged to the brackets and preventing their further rotation, substantially as set forth.

Li. The combination with the seat and bowl, having a socket, of an anchor occupying said socket, a bracket having rotative engagement with the anchor, and adapted to bear upon the bowl, and an elastic buffer arranged between the bracket and bowl, the anchor and bracket having enga-ging threads, so that by rotating the bracket it may be brought to bear upon the bowl, through the medium of the butter, substantially as set forth.

5. The combination with the seat and the bowl having a socket, of an anchor occupying said socket, a bracket secured to the anchor, and an elastic buffer arranged between the bracket and bowl, the bracket having a depression in which a portion of said buier fits, substantially as set forth.

G. The combination with the seat and theA bowl having a socket with intersecting branches, of an anchor arranged in one branch of said socket and having an eye registering with the second branch, a bolt occupying the second branch of the socket and the eye of the anchor, an elastic buer arranged between the bolt and the bowl and a bracket secured to the anchor, substantially as set forth.

7. The combination with the seat and the bowl having a socket with intersecting branches, of an anchor arranged in one branch of the socket and having an eye registering with the second branch, a bolt occupying the second branch of the socket and the eye of the anchor, an elastic buffer arranged between the bolt and the bowl, a bracket secured to the anchor, and an elastic buffer arranged between the bracket and the bowl, substantially as set forth.

8. The combination with the seat and the bowl having a socket with intersecting branches, of an anchor arranged in one branch of the socket and having an eye registering with the second branch, a bolt occupying the second branch of the socket and the eye of the anchor, an elastic buffer arranged between the bolt and the bowl so as to allow the bolt a limited lateralmovement, a bracket having rotative engagement with the anchor, and an elastic buffer arranged between the bracket and the howl, t-he bracket and anchor having engaging threads so that by rotating the bracket it may be brought to bear upon the bowl through the medium of the buifer, substantially as set forth.
