STOVE-LEG.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,239, dated November 26, 1895.

Be it known that 1, CHARLES L. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pewaukee, in the county of Waukesha and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Legs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention has for its object to facilitate handling of stoves; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings, and subsequently claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a see tion taken on line 1 1 of Fig. 2, and illustrates my improvements in connection with a stovebase; Fig. 2, a similar view on line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a like view on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.

Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents a stove-base provided with the usual ledges 1), arranged in pairs for engagement of horizontal flanges c, that extend inward from the upper ends of the stove-legs, and I prefer to provide each leg-flange with a set-screw B, that is run up against said stove-base. By means of the set-screws in the flanges c, I take up loose play and thus bind said flanges tight on the ledges 11, thereby preventing accidental disengagement of the legs from the base.

The upper portion of the leg is made in the form of a socket d for a vertical shank e, having an annular groove f, engaged by the inner end of a screw g, run through the wall of the socket. By means of the screw the shank is held against vertical displacement when the stove is lifted.

The shank e is part of a fork h in which the caster-wheel i is j ournaled, and I show the entire caster held rigid by means of a plug in the form of a screw j, extending through a base-curtain or leg-shield G into a tapped recess in said wheel, the curtain or' shield being also shown connected with the upper socketportion of the stove-leg by a screw 70, that engages a tapped opening in said leg, but it may be joined to the stove-base, and it is also practical to lock the caster-wheel by means other than those herein set forth, especially if no curtain or shield be employed.

It will be noticed that the base-curtain or leg-shield extends down close to the surface on which the wheels rest, and not only hides the legs but imparts finish to the stove.

From the foregoing it will be understood that when the curtain or shield is removed the caster-legs are free, and a heavy stove having such legs may be readily moved from one place to another with but little effort; but when said curtain or shield is in place, as herein shown, said caster-legs cannot swivel, and the caster-wheels being held against possible rotation the stove is not liable to slip out of position.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A stove-leg in the form of a caster, a fixed shield for the leg, and a screw that extends through the shield into a recess in the caster-wheel.

2. A stoveleg in the form of a caster, a shield in detachable connection with the socket portion of the caster, and a suitable plug detachably engaging the shield and the caster-wheel.
