CHARLES M. MORRIS, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT `IN STOVEL EG,S.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 215,472, dated May 20, 1879 application filed March 28, 1879.
' To all` whom it may concern:
of New York, have invented a new and valu` able Improvement in Means for Attaching Stove-Legs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the-construotion and operation ot the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked there- Figure l is a side elevation, of my invention, with the base-plate of the stove in section, taken on line y y of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is an under-side plan View ot' the base-plate, showing the position of the stove-leg when secured thereto. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the leg and rim of the base-plate. Fig. 4 is a topplau view of the leg, partly in broken section. Fig. 5 is an ,under-side plan view of a portion of the base-plate, showing the locking-lugs to which the leg` is secured. Fig. 6 is a sectional view of Fig. 5 taken on line .fr fr; and Fig. 7 is an underside plan view of the base plate and leg, partly in section, showing the position of the leg previous to its being turned in locking-contact with the lugs.
This invention is an improvement upon that class of detachable stove-legs adapted to eugage with overlapping flanges or lugs upon the base-plate of the stove, and be held in place by a suitable locking device.
The object of the present invention is to simplify the means of attaching the stove-legs to the'base-plate, so as to render them irm and rigid, and not easily disconnected in lifting or moving the stove, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and subsequently pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a section of a base-plate of a stove cast or otherwise formed with lugs a; or it' desired the lugs may be made separately, and afterT ward secured to the plate by any suitable means.
The inner faces of the lugs a are inclined downwardly and inwardly from the upper face of the base-plate, and at the same time are inclined outwardly in a horizontal section so as to be tangential, or nearly so, to the cir- 'cle of the inner ends or faceof the lugs; or,
in other words, the lugs are overhanging, so that when the ears b are in position to be locked by the bar D the lugs will prevent the leg from dropping out when the stove is lifted, as will be more fully understood by reference toFigs. 5 and 6 of the drawings.
The foot or leg B may be of' any desired form and style of ornamentation, and is cast or otherwise provided with a head, C, having ears b, the ends or edges of which are inclined, as shown at c, said inclination corresponding with the incline upon the lugs e, so that when the head O is iu the position as illustrated in Fig. 7, and turned in a direction indicated by the arrows, the ears will wedge themselves tightly against the inner faces of thelugs, and be held in contact therewith by a pivoted locking-bar7 D, secured to the under side of the base-plate A, the free end bearing against the `head C.
The leg B is formed with an inclined or V* `shaped tooth, d, upon that portion of the legv coming iu cont-act with the outer rim of the base-plate A, which engages with a correspondingly-formed recess, c, upon said rim,
and secures the leg from lateral displacement.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The base-plate A, having overhan gin g inclined lugs a, arranged as described, in combination with the leg B, formed with head C and inclined ears b, and a suitable locking device for preventing the head from turning, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The base-plate A, with overlapping` inclined lugs a and pivoted locking-bar D, in combination with the leg B, having inclined ears b, constructed to engage with the lugs a, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The base-plate A, having overlappinginclined lugs a., recess c, and locking-bar D, in combination with leg B, having head O, inclined ears b, and tooth d, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses. y OHAS. M. MORRIS.
