- T. G. MAND'l HOLDBAUK FOR WAGON POLES.
No; 549,971. Patented Nov. 19, 1895.
/ WITNESSES. 1.7V YEA T072.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TARGE G. MANDT, OF STOUGHTON, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN A. JOHNSON, OF MADISON, WISCONSIN.
HOLDBACK FOR WAGON-POLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 549,971, dated November 19, 1895.
Application filed April 5, 1895. Serial No. 544,625. (No model.)
' zen of the United States, and a resident of Stoughton, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Pole Tips and Holdbacks and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wagon-pole tips and holdbacks; and its object is to provide a holdback-plate which not only aids in holding the pole or tongue irons in place, but also serves as wear-plates to prevent chafing of the tongue or pole.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a wagon-pole with my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the holdback detached from the pole.
In the said drawings, the reference-numeral 1 designates an ordinary wooden wagon pole or tongue, and 2 the irons thereof, consisting of a metal band or strap secured to the upper side of the pole, near the middle thereof, and extending forwardly to the outer end, where it is bent downwardly and then rearwardly, extending to near the inner end of the pole. Near the outer end on the lower side the band is bent downwardly, forming an abutment 3 for the holdback-plate. The object of this band is to strengthen the pole, and it is secured to the pole by bolts or rivets passing therethrough.
The numeralel designates the holdback, consisting of a curved metal plate 5, adapted to engage with the under side of the pole just in front of the stop or abutment 3. This plate is formed with upwardly and rearwardly extending wings 6, which embrace the pole upon with a downwardly-depending lug 8, which abuts against the stop or abutment 3, and at its forward end may be provided with a short lug 9, thus forming guides for the neck-yoke center or plate. This latter lug 9 may, however, be dispensed with, if desired, as it is not essential to the operativeness of the device, although advantageous in holding the neckyoke in place.
The operation will be readily understood.
The neck-yoke center is slippedover the end the band forms a cap or tip for the pole. The V rivets which hold the wear-plates or wings to the pole pass through holes in the plates, and thus serve to relieve the stop 3 of a portion of the strain.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is -1. As an improved article a holdback for a vehicle pole, consisting of a curved metal plate adapted to engage with the under side of the pole, the downwardly depending lug at the rear end thereof, and the upwardly and rearwardly extending wear plates adapted to embrace the sides of the pole, and be secured thereto, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a vehicle pole and the bent strap or band embracing the upper and lower sides thereof, and secured thereto by rivets or bolts, the lower end extending to near the inner end of the pole, and formed with a stop, and the bent part forming a cap or tip for the pole, of the holdback consisting of the curved metal plate engaging with the under side of the pole, and formed with a downwardly depending lug and with upwardly and rearwardly extending wear plates embracing the sides of the pole and secured thereto by bolts or rivets, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
TARGE G. MANDT.
