Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. HOLDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oorpus Christi, in the county of Nueces and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Lantern, of which the following is a specification.

A This invention relates to lanterns 5 and it has for its object to effect certain improvements in that class of lanterns that are constructed with special reference to simplicity and cheapness, while at the same time being especially adapted for use in strong winds.

To this end therefore the main and primary object of the present invention is `to construct a comparatively simple and inexpensive candle or oil lantern that is easily handled and manipulated for adjusting and fastening the several parts thereof properly in position.

Vith these and other objects in view, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a lantern constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a modification. Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of the inverted- U -shaped fastening-bail and handle-bail disconnected from the chimney and holder-base. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the holder-base.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, l designates a circular holder-base preferably constructed of sheet metal and provided with a central circular depression or socket 2 that is adapted to receive the lower circular end of an ordinary glass lamp-chimney or globe 3, and 'fitted within said circular depression or pocket 2 is a circular asbestos or other fireproof packing-washer 4 that serves to make a tight joint between the lower end of the chimney and the holder-base to provide for eectually excluding the under draft. The said holder-base l supports at the center a holder 5 for a candle or an oil-font, according to whether it is desired to use a candle or oil Serial No. 527,051. (No model.)

The inverted- U -shaped fastening-bail 8 essentially consists of the opposite parallel side wires 9,arranged at opposite sides of the lampchimney 3, and the upper transverse fastening-bar 10, connecting the upper ends of said side wires, and at the opposite extremities of the upper transverse fastening-bar 10, where it connects integrally with the side wires 9, are formed the integral hinge-eyes 1l, that pivotally receive the opposite extremities of ahandle-bail 13,that is adapted to work above the top of the chimney 3. The upper transverse fastening-bar 10 is also adapted to work above the top of the chimney 3, and when the chimney is in position on the base extends transversely across the top of the same and binds on its upper edges to provide for securely and irmly fastening the chimney in position on the base. The springs 6 serve to hold the fastening-bar 10 of the bail 8 firmly onto the upper end of the chimney, and in order to release the fastening-bar from the top of the chimney it is simply necessary to grasp the handle-bail 13 and pull upward on the same against the tension of the springs 6 to carry the said fastening-bar out of engagement with the chimney and thereby allow the bail 8 to be swung at one side of the chimney, so that the same can be readily removed and replaced without having to touch the bar l0.

A modification of the lantern is illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, in which modiiication the opposite side wires 9 are independent of the upper transverse fastening-bar l0 and are connected at their lowerends directly to the holder-base 1, while to their upper ends are connected the lower ends of the coilsprings 6, the upper ends of which springs connect to the hinge-eyes 11 at the extremities of the fastening-bar l0. In this modification of the lantern the same operation is involved to remove and replace the chimney as already described, and at this point it is to be noted that the transverse bar 10 may be provided with a central upwardly-disposed supporting-arm 14, carrying a concavo-convex chimney-cap 15, as illustrated in dotted IOO lines in Fig. 2, in order to provide means for protecting the light from the weather.

Other changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be rcsorted to without departing from the principle 0r sacrificing any of the advantages of this involition.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is

l. ln a lantern, a holder base, a chimney fitted on the base, a spring retracted fastening bail pivotally connected with the base so as to be capable of being swung at either side of the chimney, said fastening bail being provided with an upper transverse fastening bar adapted to extend transversely across and bind directly on the top edges of the chimney, and a handle bail connected with the fastening bail and providing positive means for the'disengagement of the fastening bar from the top of the chimney, substantially as set forth.

In a lantern, a holder base, a chimney fitted on said base, an inverted U -shaped fastening bail consisting of a single length of; wire bent to form opposite parallel side wires and an upper transverse fastening bar adapted to extend transversely across and bind directly on the top edges of -the chimney, said fastening bar forming with said side wires end hinge eyes, coil springs connected at one end to the holder base and at their other ends to the lower ends of said side wires, and a handle bail pivotally connected to the end hinge eyes at the point of junction between the side wires and the fastening bar, substantially as set forth.
