GATE ORDOOR HANGING AND OPERATING DEVICE.

To all whom it inmy concern;
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. HALEY, a citizen of. the United States, residing at Beattytown, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate and Door Hanging and Operating Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in gate and door hanging and operating devices.
The essential objects which I have in view are to hang or suspend gates and doors, as flood-gates and barn or other doors, upon an improved hanging and operating device which readily sustains the gates or doors, which acts to lock them against being opened or cl0sed,'but which on being rotated rapidly and easily carries the gates or doors from open to closed position, and vice versa.
My improved hanging and operating device may be rotated by hand, as through a crank, or by the action of vehicles driven from or toward the gates or doors through the instrumentalities of mechanism hereinafter to be described.
, In the accompanying drawings, on which like reference-letters indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is an elevation of my invention arranged in connection with flood-gates; Fig. 2, an end view of the same; Fig. 3, a perspective view of a barn with my invention applied thereto; Fig. 4, an elevational view of the barn-door arrangement and operating mechanism, and Fig. 5 a plan view thereof.
I will first describe my invention as applied to gates, and for this purpose have selected the type of gate known as a flood-gate, for it will be understood that whether the gate be a flood-gate or some other type of gate is not material. 011 suitable posts A, connected by a cross-beam B, I mount in bearings O and D the hanging and operating shaft E, formed into or provided with one or more spiral sections F F. On this shaft I hang the gates, one for each section, as shown in Fig. 1, which gates are marked G and H, respectively. Each gate has a hanger I suspended on a straight portion of the hangershaft and each a hanger J, suspended on the spiral sections F F. To open these gates or withdraw them from over the stream, in the illustration given, the shaft E is rotated, say by the crank K, (or by other means,) and the hangers I slide on the straight portions of the shaft, while the hangers J travel on the spiral sections F and F and are forced along by the spiral contour or formation of such sections. One spiral is right-handed and the other left-handed, so that the gates travel from each other or toward each otherthat is, opened or closed, according to the direction in which the shaft is rotated. The movement or motion is quick and smooth and the action so easy that a child can operate heavy gates, and the operation is noiseless. If the gates are closed the spiral formations act as locks for the gates, and they cannot slide unless the shaft is rotated, and hence when the shaft is still the gates cannot be shifted or moved. are locked, or if partly opened they are also looked.
I have shown my hanging and operating device in connection with flood-gates, because it is often desired to withdraw such gates from over the stream, while it is also desired that they shall be locked against all motions while over the stream, except that of swinging with the current. It will also be understood that whether the gates are single ordouble or whether there is one section or more my invention will be embraced.
Referring now to the application for doors of my hanging and operating device, I have illustrated the same in connection with barndoors as an example, because such doors are large and heavy. The shaft E in this case is mounted on the side of the barn over the doorway, as shown, and each door has its hangers, as shown at C D, and each. door G and H has its hangers I for the straight portions of the shaft and J for the spiral sections F F, in the same manner as described with reference to the gates. The doors are readily opened and closed, held open, held closed, or held at any intermediate point by my hanging and operating device. It may be operated in any manner, but as some barn-doors will be very high, to allow loads If they are opened entirely they of hay to be hauled in, I have provided the shaft E with a pulley L, carrying a belt M, which runs over a pulley O, mounted near by in any convenient manner, as in standards I, secured to heavy blocks Q, let into the ground. This pulley O carries a pinion R, with which meshes a toothed rack-bar S, connected to cables or chains T and U. The cable or chain U runs direct to a pulley V, mounted on a crank or trip-shaft \V, while the chain or cable T runs over an intermediate sheave X and thence to the opposite side of the pulley V. By driving'thc vehiclewhcel against the cranks of the trip-shaft the cables or chains are operated to reciprocate the rack-bar and rotate the pulley O, by which the shaft E is revolved and the doors opened or closed, according to which direction the trip-shaft is actuated.
lVhile I have shown two spiral sections and two doors, it will be understood that one spiral section and one door will equally carry out my invention. This operating mechanism for the shaft E may also be used in connection with a gate or gates to be operated instead of doors.
It will have been seen that with my improved hanging and operating device the usual common trouble with doors or gates becoming dislodged from the track on which they are suspended is entirely avoided, and that there is no such thing as jumping the track with this device; also, as above remarked, that the device acts as a lock or fastener as well as a hanger and operator.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a gate or door, of a hanging and operating device consisting of a shaft having a spiral section, and hangers to support said gate or door, one of which hangers travels on said spiral section whereby the gate or door may be opened or closed or locked according to the direction of rotation of said shaft or its non-rotation.
3. The combination with a gate or door, of a hanging and operating device consisting of a shaft having a spiral section, and hangers connecting the gate or door with said shaft and section respectively.
3. The combination with a gate or door, of a hanging and operating device consisting of a shaft having a spiral section, and hangers connecting the same to said shaft and section, a pulley belted to said shaft, a rack bar arranged to rotate said pulley, chains or cables connected to said bar, and a wheel trip shaft with a pulley to which said chains or cables are also attached.
