GATE.
Patented May 6,1884;

GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0.298,037, dated May 6, 1884.
Application filed November 21, 1883.
To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, ALONZO H. STARING, a
' citizen of the United States, residing at Ger man Flats, in the county of-Herkimer and State of New York, haveinvented a new and useful Gate, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to gates, and more particularly to that class known as farm-gates, the object being to provide a device of this character of cheap, simple, and durable construction, and one that shall be thoroughly effective in its operation.
The invention consists in the improved con struction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed outin the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the gate partially closed. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the latch mechanism.
A A represent vertical standards, connected at their upper ends by a bar or cap, a, which is secured to said standards.
-]3 represents a track, one end of which is mortised in the inner side of the standard A, and
the other end of which is secured to the side of the standard A. This track is shaped like an inverted letter V, flattened or elongated, it being highest at the center, and sloping from thence down to both ends, and it is provided with a face-rail, B, which is preferably constructed of round metal, although a track-rail consisting of a flat metal strap may be employed. To the outer sides of the standards A A are secured arms I) b b If, which are braced by cross-bars-b b A short distance from the standard A is secured another up? right or standard, A which supports oneend of a track, 0, of the same construction as the track B, above described, the otherend of said track 0 being secured to the side of the standard A below the track B.
D represents the gate, whieh consists of a series of horizontal bars, E, secured between the strips forming the vertical uprights or bars F F of the gate. The upright F consists of strips f f, between the upper ends of whichisjournaled a grooved wheel or caster, 0, running upon the upper track, B, which is straddled or embraced by the strips f f, forming (No model.)
i the said upright F. The upright- F is constructed in a like manner of stripsf f strad dling the track 0, and carrying agrooved wheel or caster, 0, running upon said track.
At thelower end of the standard A is secured a strip or bar, G, having secured thereto vertical rods d, which serve to guide the lower portion of the gate. At thelower end of the upright A, and to the sides thereof, are secured strips 6, projecting at right angles from the said upright. Saidstrips receive the end of the gate when it is closed, and serve to prevent the lateral movement of the same.
H represents weigh ts interposed between the strips forming the verticalstandards, which facilitate the opening and closing of the gate after it has passed the central or raised portions of the tracks.
The inner side of the standard A is recessed to receive the roller journaled at the upper end of the vertical upright F, in orderthatthe gate may be entirely closed.
I represents the latch, which is pivoted between the strips ff, forming the upright F, and the body of which consists of abe'll crank lever, the lower arm, i, of which is provided with a beveled catch or hook, 6, adapted to engage a mortise, i, formed in the standard A. The other arm, '5 is provided with a dog, '5,
to allow of its clearing and engaging the mortise.
The devices for opening and closing the gate are as follows:
At the ends of the arms I; b b b are swiveled pulleys j jj j'. Pulleys j fare-also swiveled to the under side of the bar a,at about its center.
K K represent cords secured at the upper end or arm, i of thelatch I, pivoted attheupper end of the vertical upright F. The cord K is passed through the pulley j, and from thence through the pulley j. The cord K is passed through the pulley 3' and from thence through the pulley j LL represent cords, which are connected, the cord L to the cord K, and the cord L to the cord K, the cords L L passing through the pulleys j'j respectively. p
The operation is as follows: When it is desired to open the gate, either of the cords may be pulled with a quick pull, which will bring the gate to the other side of the raised portion of the tracks. It will then descend by gravity. The closing of the gate is effected in the same manner.
In order to define more clearly the advantages and scope of my improvements, I would have it understood that I claim nothing shown or described in Letters Patent No. 215,531, granted to \V. \V. McKay, May 20, 1879; but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a gate, the combination, with the vertical uprights provided with tracks which are inclined or sloping from the center down to the end, of arms secured to the uprights A A and having pulleys swiveled at their ends, a bar connecting said uprights and having pulleys swiveled on its under side, a gate carrying rollers adapted to travel on said tracks, and cords secured to the upper ar1n,aud a bellcrauk latch pivoted to the upper end of the upright F, the lower or horizontal arm of which is provided with a hook or catch to engage a mortise in the adjacent gate-post, said cords passing through the pulleys on the under side of the bar a, and from thence through the pulleys on the ends of the arms I) b b b, as set forth.
2. The combinatiomwi'th a sliding gate having an upright, F, of a latch pivoted to the upper end of said upright, and consisting of a bell-crank lever, the upper arm of which has a dog adapted to limit the movement of said latch by contact with the upper end of the upright F, and thelower arm of which has a catch engaging a mortise in the adjacent gate-post, and a cord connected to the upper arm of said latch for raising the same from engagement with the notch i". substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own Ihavc hereto ailixcd my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALONZO II. STARING.
