To alll whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, CHARLES E. MARSH, BENJAMIN DAvIs OEosLEY, and WALTER BRUNER, citizens of the United States, residing at Fort Madison, in the county of Lee and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; rand We do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to Which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention relates to improvements in double swing-gates.

The object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and convenient form of gate, whereby a person approaching from either direction may open the gate, pass through, and close it from the other side without dismounting or alighting if riding.

To these ends the invention consists inthe construction, combination, and arrangement of the device, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims. f

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a gate embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the latch mechanism.

In the drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention. 1 denotes the post, to which the gate 2 is hinged in any suitable manner. 3 denotes a bracket fixed to the upper end of said post, on which is mounted the horizontal spider 4, which carries an arm 5, from which a cord 6 extends over the grooved pulley 7 to the pivoted latch 8, the free end of which engages the keeper 9 on the post 10 when the gate is closed, and it is also adapted to engage the corresponding keepers on the posts 11 11,1ixed on either side'of the main gate-post l. 10 denotes a guard fixed to the post above the keeper and in the path of the free end of the latch, so that in closing the momentum of the gate will be arrested by the latch riding up the inclined face of the keeper and then striking the guard. This arrests the movement of the gate, and the latch then drops into the keeper.

12 denotes a brace-arm iixed to the arm 5 and having its lower end pivoted to the post 1, as shown.

13 denotes an endless cable which extends around the spider 4 and the guide-pulley 172 on the post 14. This cable is provided with rings15' 15', from which a looped rope 16' extends around the guide-pulleys 17 and 172 and thence over the double'pulley 18, the looped bight of the rope hanging down to Within reach of a person on the ground. A second similar endless cable 13' extends around the spider in the opposite direction and also around the guide-pulley 173 on the post 14. This cable 13' is also provided with rings 15 15, from which the ends of the looped rope 16 extend around the guide-pulleys 17' 171l and the double pulley 18, the looped bight of the rope hanging down, as in the first instance, and a person approaching the gate from either direction can bya proper manipulation of the depending ropes 16 or 16' swing the gate open and after passing thro ugh close the gate by means of the depending rope on the opposite side.

It will of course be understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrilcing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
