UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK A. \VERBECK, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
BOX FOR NECKWEAR, 80c.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 549,285, dated November 5, 1895. Application filed March 21, 1895. Serial No. 542,607. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. WER- BECK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes for Neckwear and other Purposes, of which the.
following is a specification.
My invention relates to the manufacture of paper boxes which are intended to contain articles, such as neckwear and the like, and in which such articles are inclosed for transportation, storage, or display.
Heretofore paper boxes for the uses indicated have been constructed by having the blocks of pasteboard arranged in appropriate places within the boxes by gluing the lateral flanges formed on such blocks to the bottoms of the boxes or by securing such blocks in place by eyelets or other fastening means. Thismode of construction is a slow one and comparatively expensive, and if glued only the blocks are apt to become detached and the goods injured. Moreover, the inside of the bottom of the box is rendered unsightly by the exposed flanges of the blocks and is oftentimes disfigured by the glue made use of in securing the blocks in place. The manufacture under the existing mode requires the block to be shaped on aformer and fully completed before it can be attached within the box, which mode of construction is tedious, requires some skill, and is consequently comparatively expensive.
By my invention I insure a more secure fastening of the blocks in place and give the box a neater appearance and greatly simplify the work of preparing such boxes, and consequently materially reduce the cost of manufacture.
My invention consists in providing the box to its body. The block is then inserted through the opening formed in the supplemental bottom, being bent to conform to the shape of the opening, and its vertical edges secured together, preferably by a strip of paper and paste. The block, when the two bottoms of the box are secured together by pasting the marginal edges of one bottom to the other, are firmly secured against displacement bythe flanges at the bottom of the blocks, being held between the two bottoms of the box. The openings in the top of the blocks may, when desired, be covered by neatlypastinga piece of paper over the same.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a top plan view of a box embodying my invention, the top of the box being omitted and a portion of the false or supplemental bottom being broken away; and Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section on the line 2 2 of Fig 1.
Like parts are indicated by like letters of reference in both views.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates a box, which may be of any desired form, the sides of which are cut out of any desired quality of pasteboard and of any color.
B indicates a supplemental or false bottom which, for appearance sake, may be made of the same quality of pasteboard as the sides of the box, and 0 indicates the usualbottom of the box which, if concealed, may be plain. In the supplemental bottom B there is provided the required number of openings D cut through said bottom of the desired shape and which are adapted to receive the blocks E, made of pasteboard, with flanges e at their bottoms formed by bending the edges of the bottoms, which is done after the block has been passed through the opening D and bent to conform to the wall of the opening, the said flanges being clipped at the angles of the opening, as indicated by 6', thus permitting the flanges e to be bent at right angles to the body of the block E, as shown. The free edges of the block E, when placed in the opening D, may be joined together by a strip of paper pasted thereon. The supplemental bottom B, when thus provided with the blocks E, is placed within the box and secured in the bottom thereof by paste or glue applied to the edges.
It is obvious that instead of making the openings D in the supplemental bottom B and fitting the blocks E therein the openings D may be provided in the permanent bottom C of the box and furnished with the blocks E, as explained, and a supplemental bottom of pasteboard attached to the permanent bottom of the box by pasting or otherwise, and thus secure the blocks in place with the flanges e of the latter between the two bottoms. It is also obvious that the box provided in its per manent bottom with blocks E, in the manner explained, could be set within another box and all the advantages of my invention secured. The blocks E may alsobe'secured to asupplemental side or sides of a box in the same manner as described for the bottom.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A box for neckwear, and other articles, comprising an inner and an outer bottom, the
inner bottom having openings through which are fitted supporting blocks with flanges on. their lower edges held between the inner and outer bottoms, substantially as set forth.
2. In a receptacle for neckwear, and other articles, the combination with a box of usual construction of a supplemental bottom placed within said box and provided with openings and supporting blocks fitted through said openings and having flanges at their lower edges resting against the under surface of said supplemental bottom, substantially as set forth.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 18th day of March, A. D. 1895.
FREDERICK A. \VERBECK.
