UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TARGE G. 'MANDT, OF STOUGHTON, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN A. JOHNSON, I MADISON, WISCONSIN.
NECK-YOKE COUPLING.
sPECIFICATION forming part of Letters IPatent No. 549,071, dated October 29, 1895.
Application filed March 9, 1895. Serial No. 541,167. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, TARGE G. MANDT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stoughton, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neck-Yoke Couplin gs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to center couplings for neck-yokes, and its object is to provide an improved construction of the same which shall possess superior advantages with respect to efficiency in operation.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a neck-yoke provided with a center coupling constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the coupling detached on an enlarged scale.
In the said drawings, the reference-numeral l designates a neck-yoke, which may be of any ordinary or suitable construction, and 2 the center coupling. This coupling consists of a curved metal plate adapted to conform to the curvature of the neck-yoke, and at each end is provided with apertures or holes 3 for the passage of bolts, rivets, or other fastening devices 4. At each side the plate is formed with outwardly-extending curved lugs 5 to receive the ring 6, and said lugs are formed with extensions 7, adapted to bear against the neckyoke, which extensions are provided with ap- 4o opposite sides of the center thereof, so that when in use the strain will come upon the plate upon opposite sides of the same instead of at the center, as usual, whereby there is less danger of the coupling working loose or being disconnected from the yoke.
The coupling-plate and its lugs are made integral or in a single piece, preferably of malleable cast-iron, and can be readily secured to the neck-yoke so as to be firmly held thereto.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- As an improved article, a neck yoke coupling, consisting of the curved plate conforming to the contour of the yoke, and having bolt holes therein, the semi-circular lugs at each end thereof, the extensions formed integral therewith, adapted to bear against the yoke and provided with bolt holes, the loose rings connected with said lugs, and the large ring connected with said rings, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto aiiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
TARGE G. MANDT.
