SECTIONAL POLE FOFI WAGON RUNNING-GEAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 781,675, dated February '7, 1905.
.Application filed October 14I 1904. Serial No. 228,455.
To (LU 'who/1t it Ntra] concer-7L:
Be it known that we, CHARLES F. POUNDS, MITCHELL E. HAYs, and ANDERsnN J. Bass, citizens of the United States, residing atSmith Center, in the county of Smith and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sectional Poles for Running- Gear of IVagens; and we do declare the fol4 lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawii'igs, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specilication.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wagon attachments, and especially in the provision of a pole or shaft of a wagon so constructed that the portion of the shaft or pole intermediate the draft-bar and the pole-tip will be jointed in order that the necks of horses may be relieved of the weight of the pole; and it consist-s in the provision of a draft-carrying portion of the pole provided with a yoke to which the pivotal pole is connected, said yoke being provided with a lug which is designed to contact with a shoulder in the recessed end of the pivotal pole provided to limit the throw of the pole in one direction and support the weight of the same.
The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and in combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
Our invention is illustrated in the accompanying dra\\.'ings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in whiche- Figure l is a perspective View of our improved shaft for wagons, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view through a portion of the shaft.
.Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the front axle of the running-gear of a wagon, B a bolster, and C the fifth-wheel.
I) designates a pole supporting section which is secured, by means of braces E, to
said bolster and to which the circular bars C, forming the fifth-wheel, are secured.
F designates a yoke, the arms of which are fastened, by means of rivets or bolts H, to said pole-supporting piece D, and F designates a projecting portion of said yoke, having a lug K thereon. N designates a second yoke having perforations in the recessed end thereof to receive a pivotal pin l, which passes through a registering aperture in the projecting portion lfr of said yoke l*`. Said voke N has a recess N/ formed in one end thereof, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the ends of which recess are adapted to form stops against which the lug K is adapted to contact as the yoke N is raised or lowered. Said yoke N is secured, by means of bolts or other suitable fastening means, to the pole Q,
pole is in the position shown in solid lines in Fig. 2 the weight of the same would be relieved from the necks of a team of horses or other animals harnessed and hitched to the pole, as the lug l( would contact with the upper edge of the recess N.
An evener or draft apparatus It is fastened to the pole-supporting sectionl), and by having' the pivotal portion of the pole Q between the evener and the point at which the pole is connected to the neck-yoke of a harness it will be observed that the weight of the sectional pole is supported by the section l) rather than coming upon the necks` of the horses.
IVliile we have shown a particular detailed forni of apparatus illustrating our invention, it will be understood that we may vary the details of the same, if desired, without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is de In combination with the axle and bolster of the running-gear of a wagon, a fifth-wheel secured thereto, a pole-supporting section secured to said bolster and axle, a yoke secured i to said section, a perforated projection upon and it will be observed that when the sectional p seid yoke, a lug projecting therefrom, a piv- In testimony whereof we hereunto afx our- IO otal pole-section and yoke secured thereto, a l signatures in presence of two Witnesses. pin'passing through registering apertures in said yokes, the yoke which is Secured to the i 5 pivotal pole-section havin@` a recess therein in which said lug is adapted t) have a movement, ANDERSEN J' BAbS' the ends of said reoessadepted to Contact with /Vitnesses: said lug to limit the throw of said pole-seo- CHARLES C.
