SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 548,950, dated October 29, 1895.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY L. CARPENTER, of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Rein- Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to rein-holders g and the object which I have in view is to provide a simple and inexpensive device which can be readily put on the rein at any desired point, and which will slide freely thereon in one direction, but when drawn in the opposite direction will clasp the rein tightly, and any unusual pressure thereon only serves to tighten the clasp upon the rein.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device which may be used with a ball or reinbutton formed of wood, celluloid, metal, or any other suitable material, alone or with a loop alone, or with both.
Another object of my invention is to provide devices for locking the clasp upon the rein and also means for unlocking the same when it is desired to remove the holder or move it in one direction on the rein.
My invention consists generally in the constructions and combinations hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims. Y
The invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speeificatiomin which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention applied to a rein. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the hinged upper part thrown back, the rein and the remaining parts of the device being in section. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the device, showing the cam-plate in engagement with the rein. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the device closed without the buttons. Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing a modied form. Fig. 6 is a similiar view showing a modified form of the locking device. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the device shown in Fig. 5 with the loop attached. Fig. 8 is a similiar view of the loop attached to the device, as shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 9 is a viewr of 3 is the under or main portion of the holder. I t is provided at each end, on its under side, with the downwardly-extendin g lugs 4, having the vertical slots or openings 5, in which the curved gripping cam or plate 6 is suspended and movable, and said cam is provided with the roughened surface 7 to engage the rein. A button 8, formed of wood,celluloid, metal, or anyother'suitable material,is provided ,having recesses to receive the part 3 of the holder and to which it is secured by screws, as shown in Fig. 3. The part 3 is also provided on its upper sides with the upwardly-extending catch 9 and with the loop l0 running lengthwise of the main portion 3 and extending laterally and downwardly therefrom.
The upper portion 11 of the holder is hinged at one end to the lower portion, as shown in Fig. 4, and is provided with an elongated opening 12 to receive the catch 9 of the lower portion. A latch 13 is pivoted upon the upper side of the part 11 and is provided with a lug or projection 14 to engage the notched upper end of the catch 9, thereby locking the hinged upper portion to the lower portion. The latch 13 is also provided with the outwardly-extending arm 15, which extends beyond the edge of the upper button, as shown in Fig. 1, and by means of which the device may be released from the rein at any time. The latch 13 is normally held in engagement with the notch in the catch 9 by the spring 16, having one end secured to the hinged upper part 11 and itsopposite end to the latch 13. l
A modification of the locking device is shown in Fig. 5, in which a semicylindrical shield 17 is shown over the locking mechanism. One end of the shield is hinged to the under portion, while its opposite end is provided with an elongated opening 18 to receive the upwardly-,projecting catch 9', which is provided with an opening 19 to receivea bolt 20, sliding longitudinally along the bottom of the shield 17. The bolt 20 is provided with an extension 21, which projects upwardly through a slot 22 in the rounded upper surface of the shield, by means of which the bolt may be pushed into or drawn out of the opening in the catch 9, thereby locking or unlocking the clasp. The main portion ot the holder shown in this figure is provided with' a longitudinal extension or ange 23, having a IOO slot 24 extending nearly the entire length thereof, through which the loop 25 is passed and secured or otherwise permanently fastened as desired, as shown in Fig. 7.
In Fig. 6 another form of locking device is shown. As there shown, the free end of the hinged upper portion is notched to receive the upwardly-extending catch or projection 9". The upper end of the catch 9 is turned inwardly, under which the end of the pivotal plate 26 is swung when it is desired to lock the holder to the rein.
In Fig. 8 the loop 25 is shown provided with a link 27, which is hooked onto the part l0 and may be detached therefrom at any time. If desired, the rein may be placed between the spring hooks or clasps 28, which are shown secured to the loops 25, and thereby the loops 25 are held close to the reins and within ready reach of the hands.
The operation of the device is as follows: The rein is placed in the main portion 3 of the holder and the hinged part shut down over it and locked, as shown in Fig. 4. Then by drawing the rein toward the leftthe journals of the gripping-plate 6 will be carried to the bottom of the vertical slots 5, and when they strike the bottom thereof the rein will be wedged between the rough surface 7 of the gripping-plate and the under side of the hinged upper portion l1 and held rmly in this position until the rein is drawn in the other direction, when the journals of the gripping-plate will slide back to the top of the vertical slots, thereby disengagng the gripping-plate from the rein.
The device may be released and moved on the rein in the opposite direction or entirely removed from the' rein whenever desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 5 l. A rein-holder consisting of a main portion and a movable portion, having a space between them to receive the rein, means for locking the two portions together, a gripping plate carried by said main portion and arranged to receive the rein between its face and the face of said movable portion, and said main portion being provided with a hook extending laterally therefrom, substantially as described.
2. A rein holder, consisting of a main part 3 and a part ll hinged thereto, said parts having a space between them to receive the rein, said main portion being provided with lugs 4 having slots or openings 5, a gripping plate carried by said lugs and arranged to move vertically in said slots 5- and said gripping plate being adapted to bind the rein when placed between the main parts, substantially as described.
3. A rein-holder, consisting of a main portion and a movable portion, with a space between them to receive the rein, said main portion being provided with the notched extension 9 to engage the opening 12in said movable portion, a pivoted latch 13 having the lug 14 to engage said extension 9 and thereby lock the two portions together, a gripping plate mounted in vertical slots and arranged to receive the rein between its roughened face and the under face of said movable portion, substantially as described.
LLA rein-holder, consisting of a main portion and a movable portion having one end hinged to said main portion, a space being provided between them to receive the rein, the free end of said movable portion being provided with an opening to receive a notched lug extending upwardly from said main portion, a pivotal latch to engage said notched lug and having the outwardly extending arm 15, a spring for holding said latch in engagement with said lug, a gripping plate carried by said main portion and having a roughened face and arranged to receive the rein between said roughened face and the face of said movable portion, and a hook extending laterally from said main portion and formed integrally therewith, substantially as and for the' purpose set forth.
5. A rein holder, consisting of a main portion and a movable portion, having a space between them to receive the rein, the buttons 8 secured to said main and movable portions, means for locking said portions together, a gripping plate carried by said main port-ion and arranged to receive the rein between its face and the face of said movable portion, substantially as described.
6. A rein holder, consisting of a main portion and a movable portion, having a space between them to receive the rein, the buttons 8 secured to said main and movable portions, means for locking said portions together, a gripping plate carried by said main portion and arranged to receive the rein between its face and the face of said movable portion, said main portion being provided with a hook extending laterally therefrom and having a link to be engaged by said hook, substantially as described.

A rein holder consisting of a main portion and a movable portion having a space between them to receive the rein, means for locking the two portions together, a gripping plate carried by said main portion, and arranged to receive the rein between its face and the .face of said movable plate, said main portion being provided with a laterally extending hook, and a loop having a link to engage said hook, substantially as described.
