To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, JOEN EHN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination Bureau, ashstand, and Writing-Desk, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a piece of furniture which combines in one structure a bu reau, a washstand, and a writing-desk, the diderent parts being so combined that when closed they have the appearance of a bureau.

The object of the invention is to economize space by the combination, in one structure, of three difierent individual pieces of furniture, and supply thereby to families living in confined quarters a piece of furniture which combines the conveniences not only of a bureau, but also of a washstand and writing-desk, which can be used separately at a time without interfering with the other parts.

The invention consists of a combined bureau, washstand, and Writing-desk having a number of drawers, a writing-desk drawer arranged in the device and provided with a partition parallel with and arranged near one side wall of the same, so as to providea space for writing materials, said partition and the other side wall of the drawer being provided with guideways, a sliding lid or desk portion formed of a rear portion fitting between the partition and the wall on the opposite side of the drawer and guided in said ways, and a front portion hinged to the rear portion and adapted to be drawn out beyond the drawer, the drawer and the rear portion of the sliding lid or desk portion being provided with stops for arresting the forward motion of the desk-drawer and the lid or desk portion, respectively, as will be hereinafter fully described and then claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1, 2, and 3 are perspective views showing, respectively, a front elevation of my improved combination piece of furniture, showing it, respectively, in closed position as a bureau, open at the top for use as a washstand, and for use as a writing-desk. Fi 4 is avertical transverse section of the upper part of my improved piece of furniture, showing the top of the washstand closed and the writing desk drawn forward, said figure being drawn on a larger scale; and Fig. 5 is a plan view, partly in horizontal section, on line 5 5, Fig. i.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the bureau portion of my improved combination piece of furniture, which bureau portion is formed of a number of drawers B at the lower part. Above the drawers B and at such a height above the floor as to be conveniently used as a writing-desk is arranged a sliding drawer G, which is provided at one side with a narrow space G, formed by a transverse partition 0, and in which inkstands and other writing utensils can be stored, the drawer 0 being further provided at the other side with a sliding-desk portion 0 which is formed of a sliding rear portion d, that is guided in suitable Ways O of the drawer and the partition forming the space C, and of a front portion 61, which is hinged at d to the sliding rear portion cl, so that when the desk portion is moved forward and projects beyond the drawer C the hinged portion (1' can be raised so as to give access to the drawer G. The drawer O and the sliding rear portion 61 of the desk portion are provided with stops 6 e, re spectively, of which when the said parts are drawn out the stops 6 will engage the projecting portions 6 in the side walls of the bureau, while the stops 6 will engagein grooves D formed in the under side of the fixed top of the bureau, so that neither the drawer nor the desk proper can be pulled out entirely, but are retained in such a manner that a firmly-supported desk is obtained that is not liable to shake or wabble when writing.

The washstand portion D of my improved combination piece of furniture is arranged at the top of the bureau and is provided with a hinged top-lid D, having a hinged front lid or drop D The top lid D is hinged to the rear part of the bureau and provided at its under side with a suitable mirror at, the front lid or drop D being adapted to be supported above the top lid D, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. To hold the hinged top lid D in upright position, a quadrantal stay S is used, which is attached to the top lid Dand which is guided in a suitable recess S in the side wall of the bureau, said stay being formed of two laterally spreading portions, so that when the lid is raised the said parts are spread and the stay supported on the side wall of the bureau. When the lid is to be lowered, the stay is closed up by pressing the spreading ends together, so that the stay can be returned into its recess in the side wall of the bureau A. In the space inclosed by the side and rear walls of the bureau and the hinged top and front lids are arranged a washbasin, pitcher, soap-dish, and the other utensils required for washing purposes, and also a shelf for supporting a brush, comb, tooth-brush, &c., so that all these parts are accessible and ready for use as soon as the top lid is raised, thus placing, also, the looking-glass at the height required for use. Vhen the washstand is arranged above the writing-desk, the same is just at the proper position for use, so that the structure forms a combination piece of furniture which can be conveniently used as a bureau, as a writing-desk, or as a washstand, as required, and forms thereby a very useful piece of furniture for hall-rooms and for apartments where economy of space is required.

Having thus described my invention, I

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with a bureau having a number of drawers, of a writing-desk drawer arranged above said drawers and provided with a partition parallel with and near one side-wall of the same so as to provide a space for writing-materials, said partition and the other side-wall of the writing-desk drawer having inner guide-ways, and a sliding-lid or desk-portion, formed ofa rear-portion guided in said ways and a front-portion hinged to the rear-portion of the sliding-lid and adapted to be drawn out beyond the writing-desk drawer, said writing-desk drawer and the rear-portion of the sliding-lid being provided with stops for arresting the forward motion of the writing-desk drawer and the lid or desk-portion, substantially as set forth.
