BICYCLE LAM i -BRACKET CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 548,422, dated October 22', 1895. Application filed February a, 1895- Serial No. 537,178. (No modeLl To 09% whom. it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM N. BEARDS- LEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bridgeport,in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Bicycle Lamp-Bracket Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to an improvement in lo lam p-bracket clamps for bicycles; and it consists in such a construction and combination of devices, hereinafter more fully set forth in the following specification, and such features as I believe to be new and novel particularly :5 pointed out in the claims to follow.
To enable others to understand my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which, together with the specification, clearly explain my device.
Figure 1 represents a view in perspective of my improved clamp, whose sides are pivoted so as to embrace various sizes of bicycleheads, said sides having ears integral there with for supporting the lamp-bracket; and Fig. 2 is an open upper plan view of the clamp and broken section of the bracket through line a of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail front side elevation of one of the side clamps. Fig. 4. is
a detail upper plan view of the back piece of the clamp.
The construction and operation are as follows: 1 1, Figs. 1, 2, and 3, are the swinging side clamps, each of which is provided with 3 5 two (2) cars integral with the said sides and located at the top and bottom edges thereof and projecting at right angles therefrom. Holes 3 are provided in said ears for the free ends of the wire bracket 4:, Figs. 1 and 2.
The back plate 5, Fig. 4, has its free ends formed into the eyes 6, through which also pass the said free ends of the wire bracket.
This forms a hinge for the sides 1 1 of the clamp.
As the material of which the clamp is com- 5 posed is thin sheet metahthe free ends of the side clamps are each reinforced by the bosses 7, attached thereto, one of which carries the clamping-screw 8, and the other is provided with a threaded hole therefor. This feature of the pivotal side clamps enables them to be readily opened (see Fig. 2) sufficient to embrace various sizes of heads without altering their form by straining.
Having thus described my invention, what, therefore, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The herein described lamp-bracket for bicycles, comprising in combination sheet metal side clamps, projecting ears integral 6o therewith, for supporting the lamp bracket, and also providing a pivotal point or hinge for said clamps, and means whereby said clamps are secured in position as set forth.
2. The herein described improvement in lamp brackets for bicycles, comprising in combination sheet metal side clamps, lampbracket ears integral with said side clamps and projecting therefrom, the lamp-bracket wires passing through said ears to form both a support for said bracket and a hinge for the side clamps, a back piece having eyes in its ends to encircle said bracket wires said back piece closing the space between the pivotal points of the side clamps, and a binding screw to fasten the free ends of said clamps, as described and set forth.
Signed at Bridgeport, in the county of Fair field and State of Connecticut, this 26th day of January, A. D. 1895.
\VILLIAM N. BEARDSLEY.
