Description

(No Model.)
W. M. POTTS. STEM FOR TOBACCO PIPES.
No; 548,007. I Patented Oct. 15, 1895.
PATENT Fries.
IVILLIAM M. POTTS, OF WYEBROOKE, PENNSYLVANIA.
STEM FOR TOBACCO=PIPES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of- Letters Patent No. 548,007, dated October 15, 1895.
Application filed January 25, 1895. $erial No. 536,196. (N 0 model.)
To on whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM M. POTTS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wyebrooke, in the county of Chester, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stems for Tobacco-Pipes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawing.
Myinvention consists of a stem for tobaccopipes of novel construction, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
The figure represents a side elevation of a tobacco-pipe embodying my invention.
Referring to the drawing, A designates the bowl of a pipe, B the stem, and O the mouthpiece thereof. The stem is formed of two tubular pieces or sections D and E, which are placed side by side and encircled by and c011- nected with the tubular coil F, one end of which is attached to the upper end of the section E and the other end to the lower end of the section D, said ends having couplings G for such attachment, it being noticed that the coil extends in the direction of the length of the stem. Removably secured to the lower coupling G is a saliva-receptacle H, which is in communication with the section D of the stem. It will be seen that when the pipe is in use the smoke is drawn upwardly through the section E, then downwardly through the coil F, and finally upwardly through the sec tion D to the piece 0, and so enters the mouth, it being evident that the smoke is cooled,
the increased distance occasioned by the sections of the stem. The saliva and nicotine that may enter the section D and coil F may flow into the receptacle H, which when removed may permit said materials to be discharged.
P designates a piece of wire or cord which is connected with the convolutions of the coil for bracing the latter and preventing separation thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 4 1. A pipe stem consisting of tubular sections D and E, and the tubular coil F, the section E being adapted to be connected at its lower end with a bow], and at its upper end with said coil, and the section D being adapted at its upper end to have a mouth piece attached thereto and at its lower end to be connected with said coil, substantially as described.
2. A pipe stem consisting of tubular sections D and E and the tubular coil F, and having a saliva cup, said coil being connected at its upper and lower ends with said sections respectively, the saliva cup being attached to the lower end of the section D, substantially as described.
3. A tubular coil and a stem therein, in combination with means attached to the convolutions of the coil for bracing the same, substantially as described.
WILLIAM M. POTTS.
