Be it known that I, CHARLES HENRY BURK- HARDT, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat- Pins, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

This invention relates to hat-pins or means for securing hats to the head, and the object thereof is to provide a simple and effective attaching device for hat-pins, constructed and applied to the hat in such manner that the perforation of the hat in a different place at each application of the pin is unnecessary, and the pin itself is applied'through or by means of an independent device designed to be secured to the hat.

The invention is fully disclosed in the fol lowing specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 represents a ladys hat secured in position on the head by means of my improved device; Fig. 2, a rear or back view of the attaching device and the pin connected therewith; Fig. 3, a front View of the same; and Fig. 4 is a side view partly in section.

In constructing my invention I preferably employ a ring 2, having secured at one end thereof and at a slight angle to the diameter of the ring, as shown in 4, a short tube 3, designed to receive the pin 4.

Securedat the opposite side of the ring 2, in line with the tube 3, is a spring 5, which is carried over said tube 3 and preferably secured or connected with the inner end thereof. The outer end of this spring is provided with an inwardly-directed shoulder or projection 6, 'and the pin 4 is provided with an annular shoulder 8, in connection with which the projection on the end of the spring 5 operates to hold the pin 4 in position. The pin 4 is also preferably provided with a head 7, which may be ornamented in any desired manner, and the operation of the device is as follows: The ring 2 is secured to the hat, as shown in Fig. 1, and the pin 4 is inserted within the tube 3, as shown, and pressed for- Ward until the shoulder 8 thereon strikes the Serial No. 541,967- (No model.)

outer end of the tube 3, when the projection on the end of the spring 5 at 6 will spring into position behind the shoulder 8 and hold the pin securely and prevent its accidental removal. The end or point of the pin 4 may be lance-shaped or otherwise formed and in this operation enters the hair and secures the hat in the usual manner, and the pin cannot be removed without operating the spring 5 to permit thereof.

The attaching device may be secured to the hat in any desired manner, preferably by sewing the same thereto, and, though I have shown the same in the form of a ring with the connected tube and spring attached thereto at opposite sides thereof, yet the form of this device is immaterial and may be modified to suit the taste and ornamented as may be required. I thus accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device simple in construction and operation, and one which, also,--may be rendered ornamental and attractive and which is perfectly adapted to accomplish the results for which it is intended.

It is evident that many modifications and changes may be made in the form of the device without departing from the scope of my invention, and I do not limit myself to the exact arrangement and construction of parts shown; but,

Having fully described the invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following:

1. In a device for securing hats to the head, the combination of a body portion, a tube connected therewith adapted to receive the pin, said pin being provided with an annular shoulder, and a spring locking device also secured to the body portion and acting in connection with said annular shoulder to hold the pin in position, substantially as shown and described.
