Be it known that I, MARY A. PALMER, a citizen of the United States; residing at Oambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and 1m proved Attachment for Hat-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

This is an attachment adapted to be applied to hat-boxes, more especially boxes for con taining ladies hats, whereby the hat may be held securely in position in the box, so that it cannot jump or fall about therein and become injured by its crown or trimming coming in contact with the hat-box. The attachment, of which there are usually two applied to a single box, renders transportation of a hat in a box or travel therewith perfectly safe, as far as injury to the hat is concerned, such hat being practically immovable with relation to the box.

The nature of the invention in detail is fully described below, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view showing two of my attachments in position holding down a hat in a box, such hat and box being shown in broken lines. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of my attachment detached from the box. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing a modification.

A represents a spring wire bent into the shape shown in Fig. 2, and having its two legs adapted to spring normally apart toward their lower ends A. The, central or connecting portion a of this spring wire is provided with a loose sleeve or tube B, from the opposite ends of which extend clamps B, which are adapted to be pressed through the side of the box and clamped on the outside thereof, so that the spring wire is enabled to swing loosely inside the box'. Any desired clamping device which is suitable for application to the side of the hat-box can be applied to the portion B. The legs of the clamping device retain adj ustably as to height the slide or holder, which consists, essentially, of the main portion 0, which extends down between said legs A, and the upper portion 0' bent at G into tubes or folds which embrace the legs A. By means of the friction produced by the outward spring of the legs this slide is enabled to remain securely at any height on the spring wire. The lower end of the slide is provided with an upturned lip D, in order that the hat may not be injured by a sharp or ragged end of metal.

In practice after the hat has been laid in its position in the box the slide or holder 0 is moved down upon the spring wire A, and its lower end D set on the upper side of the rim S' next the crown S of the hat. Thus the hat is prevented from moving either vertically or horizontally.

In the modification shown in Fig. 3 a wire E is bent into substantially the shape of the outer edge of the holder 0 and coiled around the spring wire A at E. The frictional effect is exactly the same as with the tubular folds C, while, as the wire E is necessarily without sharp edges at its lower end, the upturned lip D is not needed.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A hat-holding attachment for hat-boxes, consisting essentially of a clamp for attachment to the side of the hat-box, the spring wire A comprising two flaring legs connected at their upper ends, free at their lower ends and adapted to spring normally apart, said spring wire depending from said attachment, and a slide or holder adapted to slide vertically on the legs of said spring-wire and be sustained frictionally thereby, substantially as set forth.

The herein described hat-holding attachment for hat-boxes, consisting of the sleeve or swivel B provided with suitable clamps for attachment to the side of a hat-box, the spring wire A comprising two normally flaring legs and a central portion extending through said tube or swivel, and the slide or holder comprising the main vertical portion 0 and the upper portion 0 integral with said main portion and extending at right angles therefrom and having its ends formed into tubes or folds O which embrace and are held frictionally by the two legs of the spring-wire, substantially as described.
