JAMES C. BURGESS, OF YOUNTSVILLE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN F.
I-IAYWORTI-I, OF SAME PLACE.
BOLT=CLIPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 547,328, dated October 1, 1895. Application filed May 31,1895. fierial No. 551,110- No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES C. BURGESS, a citizen of the United States,'and a resident of Yountsville, in the county of Montgomery and State of Indiana, have invented certain vantages with respect to efliciency in opera tion.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bolt-clipper constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view looking from the under side. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view.
In the said drawings the numeral 1 designates a metal bar formed at one end with a curved stationary jaw 2, having its extremity or end beveled to form a cutting-edge. Intermediate its ends this bar has riveted or otherwise secured to it a bracket 3, through which and the bar passes a bolt 4, to which is pivoted a link 5. The other end of this link, which is rounded, tits in a curved recess 7 in the cam-head 6 of a lever 8 and is pivoted to a link 9. At the opposite side the said head is formed with a similar recess 10, in which is seated the rounded end of a movable bar 12, which end is pivoted to the outer end of said link 9. This bar passes through and works in guides 13,'secured to bar 1, and its outer end is beveled to form a cutting er ge.
The manner of using the device will be readily understood. A bolt to be clipped is placed between the cutting-edges of the jaw 2 and of the movable rod, and the lever is then pressed inward, and through the medium of the recessed cam-head and rounded ends of the bar 12 and link 5 great pressure is exerted upon the bolt, so that it will be readily clipped. It will be seen that the lever is not pivoted or otherwise secured to any 05 the parts, being held in place by the rounded ends of clip 5 and bar 12, the link 9, pivoted to said bar and link, holding it in place.
The numeral let designates a stop secured to the bar 1 for limiting the movement of the lever and preventing the cutting-edges of the jaw and movable bar from coming in contact with each other.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- In a bolt clipper, the combination with the bar having aourved cutting jaw, the bracket secured to said jaw, the bolt, the link pivoted at one end to said bar, and having its other end rounded, the movable bar having its outer end provided with a cutting edge and its opposite end rounded, and the guides in which said movable bar works, of the cam lever having opposite curved recesses in which the rounded end of said link and the inner end of the movable bar engage, forming knuckle joints, and the link pivoted to said first mentioned link and to the movable bar, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EARL L. IIURLEY, A. T. IIORNBAKER.
