RECTAL DILATOR.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EUGENE HUBBELL, of St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have inventeda certain new and Improved Rectal Dilator, of which the following is a specification.

Myinvention relates to rectal dilators, and the object which I have in view is to provide a neat and inexpensive device for dilating the rectum to overcome contraction or spasms thereof, to add tone to the upper bowel, to increase the capillary circulation of the blood, to reduce congestion and inflammation and cure constipation of the bowels, and especially to maintain the caliber of the anus and rectum after a surgical operation thereon.

A further object of my invention is to provide a device which can be easily introduced into the rectum and which will be self-retaining when placed in position.

My invention consists, generally, in two cone-shaped sections, one being of slightly greater diameter than the other and the open end of the larger being internally threaded to receive the threaded end of the smaller section, all as hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

The invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the device, Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 is a section on the line a: a; of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a section on the line y y of Fig. 1.

In the drawings, 2 represents the section forming the larger end of the dilator, and 3 the section forming the opposite or smaller end. The sections may be made of any suitable material, preferably hard rubber or metal, and the closed end of each tapers to a point, so that either end of the instrument may be easily introduced. The point of greatest diameter of the sections is near the middle thereof, as indicated by the lines m m and 'y y. From these points the walls slope to the tapered ends of the sections and are slightly contracted as they approach the open ends thereof. The section 3 is provided with a threaded extension 4. The section 2 bulges slightly at its open end and is provided with a flange 5, extending around the interior of the section at the extreme end thereof. The inner face of the flange 5 is threaded and adapted to receive the threaded extension A of the section 3 and to form a tight joint therewith. A plug or stopper 6, of any suitable material, preferably cork, is provided to fit into the open end of the section 3 to prevent the liquid from passing from one section to the other.

The operation of 'the device is as follows: The section that it is desired to insert is filled with hot or cold liquid, as may be desired, the plug placed in the end of the smaller section, and the threaded extension of section 3 screwed into the open internally-threaded end of section 2. The conical end of the cup containing the liquid is then inserted into the rectum. After the section has been inserted beyond the point of greatest diameter of the section it is obvious that the device will stay in position until drawn out. The plug 6 will not permit the liquid to run into the other section, but will heat the walls of the outer section in case a hot liquid is used.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A rectal dilator composed of separable hol low sections in alignment with each other, having a communicating passage, and means for closing the same, one section being smaller than the other, and each being composed of hard rubber and being placed base to base so that one portion will form a handle, and the walls of each section being slightly contracted toward the central portion of the dilator, whereby when either of the separable portions is filled with hot or cold liquid and placed in position the device will be self retaining, substantially as described.
