Be it known that I, ALLEN W. ELLINe-roN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Applicator, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to instruments or devices for applying medicine or healing agents to internal portions of the human body, and particularly to devices of this general character constructed to retain and apply the contents thereof; and some of the objects of this invention are to provide such devices which will be simple and cheap in construction and at the same time positive and effective in operation.

Another object of the invention is to provide a suitable vessel or device to receive and retain a healing agent and capable of being sterilized While containing such agent and to construct the same with a nozzle or extension to facilitate the application of the agent to the part to be treated.

A further object of the invention is to provide a vessel or receptacle constructed to discharge the contents thereof.

It is also an object of this invention to produce an applicator constructed to preserve and carry an absolutely-sterilized unguentum.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists, essentially, in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully described in the following specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view of aform of receiver provided with the improvements, showing the closing-plug removed; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the construction illustrated in Fig. 1, showing the nozzle without the perforations shown in Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawings, the invention is illustrated as applied to a receiver or retaining device of substantially cylindrical form, whereof one end is Wedge-shaped or flattened and the opposite end is frusto-conical; but this invention is not limited thereto, as the same is merely typical of one form of receiv ing and retaining vessel or device to which this invention may be applied.

The reference character 1 designates a receiving or retaining vessel or device which may be of any preferred form or construction that may be found desirable in practice; but that here shown is preferably provided with a wedge-shaped or flattened bottom or end 2, and said vessel is preferably constructed from soft or pliable material. The extremity of the end 2 is preferably secured within a longitudinal slot 3 of the shank 4: of an attachment provided with an eye or handle 5, whereby the same may be operated so that by rotating the attachment the extremity of the end 2 will be wound thereupon by reason of the softness or pliability of the me terial from which the vessel is constructed, thereby discharging the contents of the vessel slowly and regularly, as will be readily understood.

The top or upper end 6 of the vessel 1 is preferably inclined or frnsto-conical and desirably terminates in an extension or nozzle 7, substantially as shown in the drawings, which is preferably interiorly screw-threaded, as shown in Fig. 2, to receive the exterior screw-threads upon the solid shank 8 of a plug having a milled annular flange 9, substanti'ally as illustrated. By means of this construction the nozzle 7 is smooth upon the outside thereof in order to create no irritation or injury to the membrane of the human canal or duct into which the nozzle is introduced, and the length and size of the nozzle may be varied according to the size of the canal or duct to be treated, and after being used the plug 8 may be screwed into the nozzle and the device boiled to sterilize the same. If found desirable in practice, the nozzle may be provided with apertures 10 to permit the lateral discharge of the contents of the device 1 directly againstthe walls of the canalor duct to be treated. ,7

The operation of the invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following explanation thereof: The vessel or device 1 is filled with the medicine or healing agent desired and is closed by iuscrtin g the screw-threaded plug into the nozzle 7, as shown in Fig. 2, and when it is desired to use the contents thereof the screw-threaded plug is removed and the nozzle 7 is introduced into the human canal or duct to be treated, whereupon the attachment 4 is rotated, thereby forcing the contents of the device out through the nozzle 7,

An applicator provided with an internally-screw-threaded nozzle, to present a smooth exterior to the parts-treated, an externally-screw-threaded plug therefor, said nozzle having lateral orifices, an attachment having a longitudinal slot to receive the extremityof the applicator and constructed to be rotated to wind said extremity thereupon to expel the contents of the applicator through said nozzle and orifices.

2. An applicator provided with an internally-screw-threaded nozzle having a smooth exterior to present a smooth surface to the parts into which the nozzle is introduced, said nozzle having lateral discharge-orifices and a plug having an enlarged head or cap and an exteriorly-screw-threaded shank constructed to enter and engage said interiorly-screwthreaded nozzle and close said orifices, Whereby the applicator can be submerged in a sterilizing agent to cleanse the same without injury to the contents.
