MASSAGE INSTRUMENT.
Application filed October 25, 1920. Serial No. 419,181.
My invention relates to massage instruments in which means are provided for feeding a fluid upon the parts under treatment.
An object of the invention is to provide means for applying medicated or other liquligd to, and simultaneously massaging the s 1n. y
In the application. of remedies for treatment of the scalp it is essential that the medication be brought' into direct contact with the skin. When applied in the usual wa the hair receives most of the material WhlCll in consequence usually fails to accomplish the desired results. Furthermore the eflicacy of the remedy is usuall greatly increased if the scalp is massaged therewith. It is therefore the object of my invention to provide a bottle adapted tp contain a quantity of medicated liquid, and having a cap with which the liquid may be applied directly to the scalp and the scalp massaged during the application, the bottle serving as a handle. The most beneficial results are thus secured from the remedy. The method of use is convenient and waste is avoided.
The invention possesses other objects and features of advantage, some of which, with the foregoing, will be setv forth in the fol-- lowing description of the preferred form of my invention which is illustrated in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the specification. It is understood that I do not limit myself to the showing made by the said drawings and description, as I may adopt variations of the preferred form within the scope of my invention as set forth in the claims.
Referring to the drawings: Fig. l is an elevation of my bottle and cap, a portion being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view thru a modified form of nipple.
The device of my invention comprises a bottle 1 of a size to be conveniently held in the palm of the hand and preferably bulging at the bottom to facilitate a secure hold. Shallow depressions 2 spaced about the bulging portion of the bottle, and in which the fingers naturally rest, also'help to render the grip secure. Around the neck of the bottle are molded threads 3 which are engaged by similar threads on the flange 4 of the soft rubber cap 5, for the purpose of holding the cap securely in place wlnle perfleakage thereof.
mittingits ready removal. Preferably the flange 4 is corrugated about its periphery to give a better hand hold when the cap is removed.
Disposed about the edge of the upper surface of the ca are soft flexible projections 6 having roun edends, as shown, to adapt them or massaging contact with the skinin the use of the bottle. projections are prgjections 7 which are similar in outward shape but which are hollow and perforated at their ends so that they constitute nipples for the emission of the liquid. The chamber 8 on the interior of the nipple is preferably somewhat larger than the intake opening 9, which is, in turn, larger than the discharge aperture 11 in the end of the nipple. With this construction, the flexing and partial collapse of the nipples during the use'of the device tends to cause a continuous but relatively slight flow of the medicated liquid whicheis thoroughly worked into the skin bythe massaging action of the nipples and projections 6.
In order to provideadditional security to the cap during use, and to provide a means for preventing leakage, a depending annular conical flange 12 is formed on the inside ofthe cap. This flange is pressed snugly against the conical inner edge of the neck when the cap is applied to the bottle and assists the outer flange in preventing transverse movement of the cap on the bottle.
The medicament most frequently used in such containers has a constituent which acts upon soft rubber to expand the same. Moreover, this substance is frequently very penetrating, and it is diflicult to prevent The invention takes advantage of the first of these properties to overcome the difficulty of the second. The action of the medicament upon the inner flange 12 will cause the same to expand and this will cause the flange to press tightly against the interior of the mouth of the bottle, thus rendering leakage exceedingly unlikely.
Instead of the nipple structure just exlained, I may form the nipples as shown 1n Fig. 3, with conically shaped chambers therein, but having relatively small discharge apertures 7.
To use my device the bottle is laid in the palm of one hand and grasped firmly Within these outer end bearing being formed to provide selfretentive means for the disc or discs mounted thereon, said means acting conjunctively With the overlapping: disc or'discs mounted on the intermediate bearing and which latter disc or discs are held inanoperative position by a forked end of said body member.
2. In a tool as described, body having openforked members adapted to be closed, one member carrying intermediate and end bearings or supports on di ii'erent planes, at pair-of discs mountedon said bearings 0r supports, and the other member of said body When closed operating to retain said discs in an operative position.
3; A; tool having operative elements com prising; a body formed with open bifurcated members, one member carrying bearings or supports ondifierentplanes for a pair oi rotating discs and the other member When closed" constituting retentive means for one of said discs. I
