LOCK-HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 546,856, dated September 24, 1895. Application filed November 3,1894. Serial No. 527,792. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. KINNEAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at C- lumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inHinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a hinge adapted for heavy shutters, especially fireproof shutters.
The invention consists of the construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the position of the parts when the shutter is closed, and Fig. 3 is a similar view of the parts when the shutter is completely open.
Like characters of reference in the different views designate corresponding parts.
1 designates an an gle-plate, which is secured to the shutter and is formed with a socket 2.
3 designates the pintle, which is formed at its upper end with a horizontally-extending arm 4, and another arm 5 extends from the pintle horizontally and substantially at right angles to the arm 4. The arm 4 projects into and is adj ustably secured in the socket 2 by means of a set-screw 6.
The plate 7, which is secured to the wall, is formed with a projection 8, havinga vertical hole 9 to receive the pintle and a spirally-inclined surface 10. Another plate 11, provided with a horizontal slot 12, is adj ustably secured on the plate 7 by means of set-screws passing through said slot into the plate 7. A latch 13 is pivoted at 14 on the plate 11 and rests in a substantially-horizontal position on a lug 14 on the plate 11. The lower edge of the latch is made with a cam-surface 15 to facilitate the lifting of the hook when the shutter is opened. A loose roller 16 on the arm 4 rests on the spirally=inclined surface, which renders easy the opening of the shutter.
In opening the shutter the arm 5 acts against the cam-surfacelo and lifts the hook 13, and when opened to the extent desired the notch of the hook drops onto the arm and locks the shutter in its open position. To close the shutter, the latch is lifted with the finger and the shutter will swing to the closed position by the action of gravity.
The adjustability of the shutter on the arm 4 permits an accurate fitting of the shutter after the parts of the hinge are secured to the wall, and the adjustability of the latch permits the regulation of the extent to which the shutter shall be opened.
IVhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. 'A hinge comprising a pintle having two arms extending at angles therefrom, one of which supports the shutter, and a latch for engaging the other in the open position of the shutter.
2. A hinge comprising a pintle having two arms extending at angles therefrom, one of which supports the shutter, and an adjustable latch for engaging the other in the open position of the shutter, substantially as described.
3.'A hinge comprising a plate 1 having a socket 2, a pintle 3 provided with arms 4 and 5, the arm 4adjustable in said socket, a plate 7, and an adjustable latch on said plate 7' to engage arm 5 to hold the shutter in open position.
4. A hinge comprising a pintle having two arms 4.and 5 extending at angles therefrom, a roller on arm 4, the plate 7, a cam surface on saidplate upon which the roller rests, and
a latch on said plate for engaging the arm 5 IVILLIAM R. KINNEAR.
