SPECIFICATION forming part 0+." Letters Patent No. 634,369, dated October 3, 1899.
Application filed August 14, 1899. serial No. 727,109. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD O. QUIMBY, of the city of Minneapolis, county of Hennepin', State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Separable Hinges for Awning-Blinds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in separable hangers for storm-sash, windowscreens, and any sash or frames that .it is desired to secure in a readily-removable manner over a window, door, or other opening.
The objects I have in view are to provide a separable hanger that can be stamped or formed out of sheet metal, that will be selfeentering, in which the pivotal or turning point of the hanger will be at some distance in front of the plane of the outside surface of the window or sash, and that will have the two parts of the hanger so locked together as to prevent any upward movement of the sash either when the window is closed or open the amount that it is usually opened for airing the room or for other purposes, but which permits a slight upward movement of the sash while it is being closed,'s0 that the sash will pass over any thin coating of ice or other substance that may collect on the upper surface of the edge of the window-sill The invention consists generally in a separable hanger consisting of a hook member adapted to be secured to the window-frame or wall and having a projecting hook port-ion provided with a V-shaped recess in its upper.
surface at some distance in front of the plane of the wall or window-frame and an eye member adapted to be secured to the window or other sash and having an inclined flange provided with a slot adapted to engage said hook member and to be locked thereon.
The invention further consists in the constructions and combinations hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a per spective view of a portion of a window or other sash and frame having my improved separable hanger applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a'perspective detail looking at the part of the hanger from the opposite side to that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the hanger shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the hook member shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. Fig. 5 is a perspective view. Fig. 6 is a plan View; and Fig. 7 is a section on line so 00 of Fig. 6, showing a modified form of one member of the hanger.
In the drawings, 2 represents a portion of a window-sash, screen, or other removable sash or frame that it is desired to secure to a in such manner that it may be readily removed therefrom. The separable hanger consists of two membersthe hook member 5 and the eye member 7. These parts are preferably formed of sheet metal, and the hook member may be made in the form of a flat sheet or plate, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4. The hook portion of this member is provided with the inclined upper edge 6, the inclined forward edge 8, and the substantially horizontal lower edge 10, having preferably the curved recess 12 located about centrally therein. In the upper edge of the hook member 5 is a V-shaped recess 14, the apex of the V being at some little distance from the front wall when the hook member is secured in position. This hook member is preferably provided withsuitable holes 15, into which suitable screws or nails maybe inserted for securing the hook member in position. The hook member instead of being formed as a flat plate, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4:, may have its hook portion at right angles to the other part of the member, as shown in Figs. 5, 6, and 7. In this instance the hook member will be seor wall instead of being secured upon the edge of the casing and between the casing and sash, as is done when the hook member is formed as a fiat plate, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. The operation of the hook member is the same in both instances. 7
The eye member 7 of the hanger is provided with an inclined flange 9, having therein a slot 11, which is adapted to receive the hook portion of the hook member of the hanger. The flange 9 is inclined toward the windowsash from the top to the bottom, so that the upper end of the slot 11 stands farther away from the window or other sash than does the lower end. The upper end of the slot 11 rests window-frame or other suitable frame or wallof the outer surface of the window-frame or cured upon the outside of the window-casing I in the V-shaped recess 1-1 in the upper edge 6 of the hook member 5. sufficient length to permit its lower edge to just swing under the lower edge 10 of the hook portion of the member 5 when the upper edge of the slot is resting in the V-shaped recess 14:. I prefer to provide the curved recess 12 in the lower edge 10 of the hook portion, which allows the sash when being closed to rise slightly, thereby permitting the lower end of the sash to pass over any thin film of ice that may have formed upon the edge of the window-sill. After the lower wall of the slot 11 has passed the recess 12 it will be again brought onto the part of the edge 10 inside of said recess and will thereby be forced down again to its lowermost position and will be locked in this position, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and of the drawings. As the upper end of the slot. 11 and the apex of the recess 14 are both at a point some little distance in front of the surface of the window-frame or wall, the sash may be turned on this support without causing the sash and the eye member of the fastener to move outward, as is necessary with such separable sash-hangers as I am familiar with. In ordinary use the lower end of the sash will be swung outward and fastened bya hook or other suitable fastener; but the lower end of the sash will not ordinarily be moved far enough to bring the lower end of the slot 11 out from under the lower edge 10 of the hook member of the fastener. The V-shaped recess 14 forms a selfcentering means for the two parts of the fastener. The recess 12 may, if preferred, be omitted, although I prefer to provide this recess, asit will oftentimes be the means of providing an easy closing of the sash.
It will be seen that the fastener is very simple and easy of application and operation.
As it may be stamped out of sheet metal, it 1 The self-centering 1 It is also Q is chcapin construction. feature is of especial advantage.
The slot 11 is of i I of especial advantage that the turning-point between the two parts of the hangerbe located at a point some little distance in front of the wall of the window-frame when the device is in use, thereby permitting the lower end of the sash to swing outward without causing i the eye member to slide forward on thehook E member, as is necessary in these forms of separable hanger in which the turning-point between the two parts of the hanger is close against the face of the window-frame.
*1 do not limit myself to the details of the construction herein shown and described, as the same may be varied in many particulars without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A separable hinge, comprising a hook 1 member, and an eye member having an in- I clined flange, with aslot formed in said flange, whereby the turning-point between the two members of the hanger is forward of the sur* faces to which the hanger is attached, for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, in a separable hinge, with the hook member 5 having the vertical hook portion, with a V-shaped recess in its I upper edge, of the eye member having an in- Y clined flange, and a vertical slotin said flange, for the purpose set forth.
4 3. The combination, in a separable hinge, with the hook member 5 havinga vertical hook portion, with a recess 12 in its lower edge,of the eye member havinga flange inclined from the top toward the bottom, and a slot 11. in said flange, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set i my hand, this 10th day of August, 1899, at
Minneapolis, Minnesota.
EDWARD C. QUIMBY.
