FOLIO-BINDER.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters IiPatent No. 546,811, dated September 24, 1895.
Application nea Apri111, 1894. sean No. 507,151. et@ man.;
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PROSPER D. FENN, of Chicago, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in FolioBinders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a binder for periodicals or other publications which are issued in separate parts or numbers; and the object of the invention is to provide a convenient means for binding or fastening the several parts or numbers of a work together into 'a volume having suitable backs or covers.
In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure 1 is perspective View showing a number or series of folios secured in place, one of the folios being open to show the manner of insertion. Fig. 2 is a broken end elevation showing the volume closed. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view showing in detail the manner of attaching the binding-wires to the stiffener used in the hinge between the covers, and Figs. 4 and 5 are sectional details showing two forms of construction of the stiffener.
In the drawings, A A represent suitable covers or cases, which are hinged together by means of the backbone a, the stiffener B, and the paste or glue strip C. The latter is of such width that its margins project beyond the edges of the stiffener to afford means for attaching it to the surfaces of the adjoining ends of the covers A.
D represents binder-wires, of any number desired, which may be dat, round, or oval wires, having their ends hooked or returned, as at d, and securely fastened upon the under sides of the ends of the stiffener B. This may be done in any convenient. manner-as, for example, by means of a strip of cloth pasted or glued over the said ends, which may be also set or bound together by glue or other cement.
In the construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the returned ends d are shown as bent parallel to the main body of the wires, and the bend is preferably angular, so as to afford room for inserting the leaves of the folio between the binding-wires and the face of the hinge. As shown in Fig. 4, the stiftener terminates at the bend of the binder-wire, while in Fig. 5
the stiffener is shown extended, as at b, its ends being bent at an angle to its body, so as to support the binder-wires free from the face of the hinge. This construction will be preferable whenever a considerable number of parts are to be bound together, and it permits the ready insertion or removal of the parts.
It maybe found expedient to embed the returned ends of the wire in the stiffener or to turn down their extremities in the form of prongs adapted to enter the body of the stiffener. I have shown, however, a fold c of the strip C pasted over them, such fold being pierced by-the returned ends d of the wire, as clearly shown in Fig. 4.
I claiml. In a binder of the class described, the combination with a stiener forming a portion of the hinge, of a series of binder wires having bodiesof a length equal to that of the stiffener and their ends bent or hooked, the extremities embracing the stiffener and permanently secured thereto and means for securing the stiener to a case or cover whereby the bent ends are inclosed between the stiffener and such case or cover, substantially as described.
2. In a binder of the class described, the combination with a stiffencr forming a portion of a hinge piece, of a series of binder wires having their ends returned to embrace the ends of the stiffener and the extremities of the bent ends secured.to the back thereof, and a paste strip secured to the stiifener and affording means for attaching the latter to a case or cover, substantially as described.
3. In a binder of the class described, the combination with a stiftener adapted to form a portion of a hinge, of a series of binder wires having their ends bent angularly with reference to the bodies and their extremities returned parallel to the bodies and embracing the ends of the stiffener, a paste strip secured with the body of the stiffener and having its margins extended beyond the edges thereof, and a fold thereof secured over thereturned ends of the binder wires, substantially as described.
4. In a binder of theclass described, the
ing the stiffener to a case or cover, substantially as described.
PROSPER D. FENN.
