RECEPTACLE FOR PULVERIZED SOAP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 546,684, dated September 24, 1895. Application filed December 29, 1894. Serial No. 583,249. (No model-) To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES S. STEVENSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Soap-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention contemplates certain new and useful improvements in soap-holders, and has special reference to that class employed for powdered or pulverized soap.

The object of the invention is to provide a holder or receptacle for the powdered soap, which in shape or exterior contour will correspond with or have the resemblance of an ordinary cake of soap, and which can be conveniently held in the hand of the operator by which the discharge-controlling mechanism is operated.

A further object is to provide simple and highly eflicient means for effecting the discharge of the powdered soap from the holder.

The invention comprises the novel features of construction, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims. r

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in perspective of a soap-holder constructed in accordance with my invention, the cover being open. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same with the cover opened.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the holder or receptacle for the powdered or pulverized soap. This holder or receptacle is of substantially elliptical form, and in general outline has the resemblance of an ordinary flat cakeof soap. A peripheral flange (1 extends from the bottom a, of this holder, and to said flange is hinged the cover 2. This cover corresponds in general outline to the bottom of the box, and when closed forms a tight compartment for containing the powdered soap. In this peripheral flange a are formed two holes or openings 12 1), arranged a short distance apart. In thehole or opening 1) is a reinforcingcollar 7, while in the hole or opening bis a boss 9, designed to form the seat for a valve 10., This valve is secured on the outer end of a rod 8, which extends into the holder and is pivoted to one end of a lever 4:, which is fulcrumed on a bracket 3, attached to the bottom a of the holder. To the other end of this lever is connected a rod 5, which projects through the collar 7 in hole or opening 1), and upon its outer end is a pushbutton 6. One end of a coil-spring 12 is attached to that end of lever 4' to which the valve-rod is secured, the opposite end of said spring being connected to the peripheral flange a at the opposite side of the holder.

The numeral 13 designates an inwardly-extending bar having a notch near its inner end, and its outer end is secured to the peripheral flange a of the holder. The valve-rod 8 works in this notch and is guided thereby. The tendency of the coil-spring is to draw the valverod inwardly and hold the valve against its seat.

In practice the holder or receptacle is filled with powdered or pulverized soap, after which the cover 2 is closed. The holder being of the form described can be easily held in one hand of the operator, and the latter by pushing inward on the push-rod will unseat the valve 10 and allow the escape of the powdered or pulverized soap through the boss 9 in the hole or opening I) by the shaking or agitation of said holder. Upon relieving pressure from this push-rod the spring 12'will at once reseat the valve.

From what has been said it will be seen that I have produced an exceedingly simple and highly-efficient holder or receptacle for powdered or pulverized soap, that by making the same in the form described the holder can be conveniently held in one hand of the operator, and the distributing mechanism can be easily operated by the fingers of the same hand.

The holder is exceedingly simple and attractive in appearance, and being composed of but few parts is not liable to readily get out of order.

I claim as my invention 1. A holder or receptacle for powdered or pulverized soap having a bottom provided with a peripheral flange, a cover correspond ing to said bottom connected at one side to said flange, said flange having two holes or openings therein, a valve designed to be seated against one of said holes or openings, a lever fulcrumed in said holder, a rod connecting said valve to said lever, a push rod connected to the other end of said lever and extended through the other one of said holes or openings, a spring connected to said lever for normally holding said valve against said hole or opening, and a guide-bar for said valve-rod, substantially as set forth.
