lSPEGIFIGAJIIOIQ forming part of Letters Patent' No. 546,20*?, dated September 10, 1895.
Application filed lApril 19, 1895` Serial No. 546,323. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. WALSH, of Easton, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Barrel-Cover, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
.My invention relates to improvements in barrel-covers which are adapted to be placed over barrels from which goods are rctailedsuch as cracker-barrels, sugar-barrels, and the like-and the object of my invention is to produce a cheap and simple cover which may be easily applied to or removed from a barrel,v
which keeps the contents of the barrel from the air, which also prevents pilfering and excessive sampling of the contents of the barrel, and is adapted to exhibit a sam ple of the contents to advantage.
To these ends rnyinvention consists of certain features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter dcscribed and claimed.
Reference is to be had-to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a cross-section of my improved cover as applied to a barrel. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the cover, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof.
The barrel l0 may be of any usual kind, and the cover 1l, which rests on the barrel, is provided with an edge liange 12, preferably made of galvanized iron, which overlaps the side of the barrel and excludes air and dust.
In the center of the cover, on the inner or lower side thereof, is secured a box 13, which has a glass top 14:, this being below the cover 11, so that it will not be easily broken, and the box is provided at its bottom with a slide l5, which is mounted in a slideway 1G and has a suitable pull or handheld 17. It will be seen that the upper edge of the barrel 10 lits against the cover l1 between the iange 12 and the box 13, so that when the cover is on the barrel no access can be had to the box or its slide glass can be inserted through the bottom of the box, and removable strips or cleats 1S are provided on two sides of the box, or on all sides thereof, to properly support the glass top.
When the cover 1l is to be used, the slide l5 is removed, the cover inverted, a sample of the goods contained in the barrel placed in the pocket 13, the slide 15 replaced, and the cover placed upon the barrel. The barrel is thus securely covered and the sample of goods in the pocket 13 may be seen through the glass 14. As will be seen in the Figs. 1 and 3, the slide 15 is arranged below the plane of the Ilange 12, so that the said liange doesnot interfere with the removal of the slide. In order that the cover may be readily manipulated I may attach to its upper side handles 19, as shown.
It will be observed that the improved cover has no parts projecting into the barrel from the box or the cover proper, that the entire construction is very simple and strong, that the glass top may be readily replaced with a new one if necessary, that the slide 15 is not accessible unless the cover is removed from the barrel, and that the insertion ot a sample into the box can be made very easily.
I desire it to be understood that various modifications may be made without departing from the nature of my invention as defined in the appended claims. It obviously is immaterial whetlier the box 13 is a separate structure secured to the cover 1l, as shown, or is made integral with the cover.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The herein-described cover, provided with a flange projecting on one side thereof, and an opening in the cover, a box projecting from the cover on the same side as the said flange and beyond the free edge of the flange, the box having a transparent top for closing the opening of the cover, anda slide forming a bottom for the box and arranged to move in a plane below the free edge of the flange, substantially as set forth.
2. The herein-described cover, provided with an opening, a box on the lower or inner side of the cover and surrounding the said opening, a transparent top fitted against the IOO lower side ofthe cover at the opening,r thereof, the interior ofthe box is of sufficient length 15 said top being smaller than the boX so that and width to permit they top to be inserted it can be inserted and removed therethrough, and removed therethrough, the lower ends of ineans for normally holding the top in posithe said sides projecting beyond the lower 5 tion, and a movable bottom for the box, subedge of the flange ofthe cover, cleats located stantially as set forth. Within the box to hold the transparent 'top in zo 3. The herein-described cover, provided position against the cover, and a slide formwith an opening and a flange projecting on ing a bottom for the rbox and arranged to the inner or lower side of the cover, a transmove in a plane below the `free edge of the f m parent top tted against the lower side of the flange, substantially as described.
