To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, PHILEMON A. BRYANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sonora, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention consists in certain novel and valuable improvements in a combined sliding and swinging gate; and the invention will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which the same numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved gate, showing the same in its closed position. Fig. 2 is a view showing the gate partly slid back and swung completely open in one direction. Fig. 3 shows it swung completely open in the other direction. Fig. 4: is a detail view of one of the hinge-supports or hanging devices.

Referring to the several parts by their designating-numerals, 1 indicates the hinge-post, and 2 the latch-post, of the gate, the latter being provided with the latch-piece 3 projecting from it, as shown.

The gate itself is formed of the sliding gate proper 4, which is mounted, as shown, in the hinged gate-section 5, so that it can be slid back and forth in the same, as illustrated in the drawings. a

The gate is supported and swings upon the peculiar hinge device shown in the drawings and illustrated in detail in Fig. 4. These hinges, which are preferably made each of a single strip of metal, are formed with the square or rectangular body portion 6, adapted to inclose and fit around the rear post or upright of the gate-section 5, the ends 7 then projecting parallel to each other on each side of the gate-section bars, to which they are bolted. The hinge-arm 8 extends from the hinge-body at right angles to the line of the gate to which the hinge is secured, and at its extremity is formed with the vertical eye or socket 8, which hinges upon a supportinghook 9, secured in the side of the hinge-post 1, as shown. The arms 8 0f the supportinghinges are of such length that, standing at right angles to the hinge body and the gate, they will permit of the entire gate being swung entirely open, at right angles to the fence, in either direction, as shown respectively in Figs. 2 and 3.

.It will be seen that the gate is normally held closed by the latch 3 engaging with one of the gate-bars, and by disengaging it from the latch the gate proper 4 can he slid partly open, without swinging it on its hinges, to open a passage of any desired width, or, owing to the peculiar construction of the hangers or hinges, can then be swung entirely open in either direction, according to the direction from which a carriage, for example, is approaching. Without sliding it back at all the gate can be swung completely open in one direction, the direction shown in Fig. 3. It will be seen that this novel hanging brings the free end of the gate square against the side of the latch-post, where it can be firmly held by the simple hook 3, Without requiring any complicated fastening device for said end, the said novel hangings permitting the entire gate to be mounted against the sides of the posts instead of between them, while enabling the gate to be manipulated in the several ways above described, thus securing great effectiveness and convenience in use, with a construction of peculiar simplicity, avoiding all complicated and expensive mechanism.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a sliding and swinging gate a hanging device consisting of a body portion adapted to be secured to the gate frame andhaving an arm projecting out at right-angles to the line of the gate, in combination with a hook support on which the extremity of said arm is pivotally mounted; substantially as set forth.

2. In a sliding and swinging gate the combination with the hinge section of the gate of the hanging devices consisting each of the rectangular body portion 6 having the projecting ends 7, the arm 8 projecting at rightangles to the line of the gate and having the end socket, and a supporting hook engaging with said socket and secured in the side of the hinge-post; substantially as set forth.

3. The herein-described combined sliding and swinging gate comprising the gate section 5, the gate proper mounted and sliding therein, the hanging devices inclosing and secured to the rear upright of the gate-section 5 and formed with the arms 8 projecting at right-angles to the line of the gate, and the 10 hook supports secured in the side of the hingepost and upon which the extremities of said arms are pivotally mounted; substantially as set forth.
