SULKY FOR PLOWS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 545,765, dated September 3, 1895.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN W. BELLEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cedar Vale, in the county of Chautauqua and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sulkies for Flows; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a partof this specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in wheelplows, and more especially to .a riding-sulky which may be readily and quickly attached to an ordinary walking-plow, suitable means being provided to regulate the height of one end of the axle of the sulky, the said axle being adapted to turn down anytrash or weeds to be turned under by the plow.

A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a sulky for attachment to an ordinary walking-plow, and capable of being adjusted for use with a right. or left hand plow by simply removing the end of the axle entering the main Wheel and bringing the axle on the opposite side of the said wheel and inserting said end in the wheel, which, owing to the novel construction of my inven-' tion, may be easily and quickly accomplished.

To these ends and to such others as theinvention may pertain, the same consists, further, in the novel construction, combination, and adaptation of the parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and then specifically defined in the appended claims.

I clearly illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification,'and in which drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my sulky shown. Fig. 2 is a detail view as attached to a plow, the dotted line showing the reversed position of the axle.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the bifurcated frame supporting the seat B on the spring-bar O, and D is an axle removably held in the free ends of the bifurcated frame, and between which ends is located the wheel E, mounted on the said shaft.

F is an upright bar keyed at its lower end to the axle, and has pivoted to it at any suitable location the lever G, having connection with the pin K, which engagesin the notches of the curved rack-segment L, which is securely keyed to the shaft or axle also.

To the opposite end of the axle is keyed the plate M, having a'longitudinal slot m, and in said slot is held the stub-shaft N, on which is journaled the small wheel 0, the said stubshaft being slidingly adjusted in the slot.

P is an integral collar on the axle, and Q is a swiveled ring mounted on the axle, the said collar serving as a stop to prevent the said ring working toward the large wheel.

R is a plate pivoted to a portion of the framework and has an aperture 0" at its free end, into which aperture the hooked end of the rod S is designed to engage, the other end of the said rod having a hook for engagement with an eye on the ring Q. When the axle is reversed and placed on the opposite side of the wheel, the rod assumes the position shown in dotted lines. The free end of the tongue of the sulky is provided with a hook and clevis for attachment to the cross-piece T of the plow.

From the foregoing it will be seen that my improved sulky for walking-plows may be readily equipped for left or right hand plowing, that the large wheel will run in the furrow, and by means of the lever and bar holding said lever the small wheel may be regulated by turning the axle to the right or left.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. As an improved article of manufacture a sulky for walking plows, having an axle adapted to be reversed and an adjustable rod designed to hold said axle in its reversed position, whereby said sulky may be used in connection with a right and left handed plow, substantially as shown and described.

2.
