R IDING ATTACHMENT FOR CULTIVATORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part 3 is a perspective view of a bar for connecting the attachment with a split tongue.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish riding attachments for cultivators so constructed that the driver, While riding, may
guide the plows.
A are two bars, to which, at a little distance from their forward ends, are attached U-bolts .B, for connecting the bars A with the arched bar or axle of the cultivator.
To the forward ends of the bars A are attached, or upon them are formed, vertical cross-heads O, the upper and lower ends of which are connected by cross-bars D. The bars A, from points a little in the rear of the U-bolts B, incline upward and outward, and their rear endsare bent downward, and to them are swiveled the standards E of the wheels F, so that the attachment may be readily turned. 1
The standards E are formed of metal bars bent into U form, and have the. wheels F pivoted between theirends, the bends of, the strap-standards E being so formed as to fit upon the bars A. The bent parts of the straps'E are made wide, to give them a wide bearing, and are slotted to receive the collars E, which are secured to the bars A by setscrews, so that the wheels F may be"raised and lowered as required.
G is a cross-bar, which has holes in its ends to receive the vertical rear parts of the bars A, and has the drivers seat H attached to its center. The ends of the cross-bar G are seowed to the bars A by set-screws I, so that the bar may be raised and lowered, as the convenience of the driver may require. The
oflLetters Patent No. 224,390, dated February 10, 1880. Application filed December 6, 1879.
cross-bar G may also be provided with adjustable stirrups to support the drivers feet.
The bars A are provided with hooks J, upon which the plows may be hung to sup port them above the ground when turning and'when passing from place to place.
The bars A are made of such a length that the driver, when sitting upon the'seat H, may take hold of the plow-handles to guide the plows. s
The rear parts of the bars A should be at such a height that the plow-handles may pass under them, if necessary. a
When the cultivator is provided with a straight tongue the said tongue passes between the cross-heads C of the bars A, so as to bear against one or the other of the said crossheads 0 when turning, and thus turn the attachrnent.
When the cultivator is provided with a split or forked tongue a bar, K, is attached to the arch of the cultivator, between the bars A, which bar K passes forward between the crossheads 0, and its forward end is attached to the said tongue, so that theattachment may be turned by the bar K striking against one or the other of the cross-heads 0.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-'- 1. The combination of the bars A, provided cross-heads O, andthe cross-bars D, of the connecting-bar K, substantially as herein shown and described, so that the device may be used with a'cultivator provided with a split tongue, as set forth.
HENRY coLE.
