ACULTIVVATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,990, dated October 4, 1881.
Application filed July 14, 1881. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES B. DOUGLAS,
of Troy, in the county of Pike and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in cnltivators; and it consists in certain combinations and arrangements of parts,
as more fully hereinafter set forth and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan view; Fig. 2, a side elevation with one wheel removed; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the cultivator; Fig. 4, a-similar view of the slotted guides; Fig. 5, a viewof the plows, and Fig. 6 a detail of the cultivator-standards.
The letter A indicates the frame ofthe apparatus, which is mounted upon a bent axle, B, at the rear.
The letter 0 indicates the rear wheels The forward end of the said frame A is mounted upon a vertical frame, D, which carries at its lower end an annulus, E, which is connected to the frame A by means of the braces F, for the purpose of strengthening the parts.
The letter G indicates a similar annulus secured to a vertical bifurcated frame, H, be-
tween the lower ends of which is journaled a wheel, I. The frame H has secured to it and extending through an opening in the frame D' annulus are secured two curved rods, M, one acting as a brace to the other, which is provided with a hook, N, at its free end. To this hook the tongue P is attached by means of an eye, B, so thatit may swing freely to either side.
The letter S indicates a central, and T two side, beams,ihinged to said central beam. The said central beam has secured to it a curved flat bar, U, the ends of which are slotted, as
indicated by the letter V, to receive the setsorews entering the side bars, T, by means'of which said side bars maybe set at any desired angle to the central bar, S. The forward end of the central beam is provided with a vertical segment, W, having at suitable-intervals apertures whereby the said beam may be 'adjustably secured to a slotted projection, X,
on a transverse bar, Y, secured to the frame/A.
loosely to the rear of the central beam, and
extending upward through a slot in the frame A and through the end of a flat spring, which issecured at E to the frame A, and is slotted at its free end for the reception of the flat bar D, the said bar being perforated at intervals, so that it may be adjusted to the spring as desired, and secured under the same by a pin, or to the spring by pins. above and below.
The letter F indicates the standards which carry the cultivator points or plows. The'se are swiveled to the beams 'so that they can be turned and be properly presented to the ground as the angle of the side beams with respect to the central beam is varied. In practice it will be found preferable to construct the standards in two parts, f and f, with oppositelyserrated interlocking edges, the parts being held together by a longitudinal screw bolt and nut in such manner that the parts may be separated slightly and turned to any desired position and adjusted.
The letter G" indicates a lever fulcrumed to the frame A in such position as to be under convenient control of the driver. The lower end of the lever is provided with a chain, H, which connects with the central beam for the purpose of enabling the beams to be elevated when necessary.
The letters I 1 indicate chains connected one to each end of the transverse barYand to the respective side bars, so as to throw the strain on said transverse bar and relieve the set-screws by which the side bars are held in adjusted position when the plows meet with anyunusualobstruction. Theeultivatorpoints or plows may be of any suitable descriplion and attached in any desired manner.
In the modification shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings the plows are represented as arranged for furrowing. In this instance two parallel plow-beams are employed, which are pivoted to a connecting-block, K. Each beam is provided with a perforated segment at its forward end to be secured in slotted projections X on the transverse bar Y. The beams near their rear ends are provided with pivoted flat bars, which are adapted to set in the slotted guides L, secured to the rear transverse bar of the frame A, and the block K is provided with a loosely-connected flat bar adapted to pass up through a slot in the frame A, and through the slotted spring, and be adjustably secured thereto, as before mentioned. The
spring in each case allows the plows to yield when meeting obstructions, and thus prevent sudden shocks and injuries consequent thereupon.
It is evident that the plow-beams and plows in the modification may be adjusted vertically independently of each other.
The guides L are provided with slotted bases M, and are secured to the rear transverse bar of the frame A by means of screws N, in such manner as to be adjustable laterally, so as to increase or lessen the distance between the plow-beams and their plows.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In combination with the main frame, provided with slotted guides and with a slotted spring, the plow-beams having a segment in front adapted to be secured to a slotted projection on a transverse bar secured to said frame and vertical flat bars adapted to pass through the slotted guides and slotted spring, the bar passing through the spring being secured to the same, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. In combination with the side beams,
' hinged to the central beam and provided with set-screws passing through slots in a curved bar secured to the central beam, the chains connecting said side beams with a transverse bar secured to the main frame to relieve the set-screws, substantially as specified.
