SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,147, dated June 16,1885.

To rtZl whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SUMNER BRACE LITTLE, of Chapin, in the county of Franklin and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

The object of this invention is to provide cultivators constructed in such a manner that they will be strong, of light draft, and readily adjusted as the work to be done may require.
A are the wheels, the axle B of which is made tubular, so that it can be made light, and at the same time have the necessary strength and size. The middle part of the tubular axle B is arched, as shown in Fig. 3, to adapt it to pass over plants without injuring them.
Upon the axle B, at the outer sides of its angles, are placed sleeves 0, upon which are placed the forward eyes of the coupling-bars D. The coupling-bars D are secured in place upon the sleeves O by set-screws E, passing through the said bars and resting against the said sleeves, so that by loosening the said setscrews the said coupling-bars D can be adjusted out or in upon the sleeves O, to bring the plows farther apart or closer together, as may be required, and at the same time the said sleeves, and with them the said couplingbars, will turn freely upon the axle B, allowing the plows to have the necessary vertical movement.
The rear eyes of the coupling-bars D are vertical, and within them are placed sleeves P, which are held in place by set-screws G, passing through the said bars and resting against the sides of the said sleeves.
Through the sleeves F are passed bolts H, the ends of which are secured to the forward ends of two bars or straps, I. The bars I of (No model.)
I each pair are bent toward each other, and then bent to the rearward, and their rear ends are rigidly bolted to the upper and lower sides of the forward end of a plowbeam, J, so as to serve as a rigid clevis.
By this construction the plows will have a free lateral movement, and can be raised and lowered by loosening the set-screws G and moving the sleeves F up or down in the eyes of the couplingbars D.
To the outer sides of the rear ends of the beams J and to the inner sides of the middle parts of the said beams are attached the ends of curved bars K, the middle parts of which are widened, or have short cross-bars formed upon or rigidly attached to them. To the lower parts of the widened parts of the bars K are pivoted, by bolts or rivets L, the plowstandards M, in the rear edges of the upper ends of which are formed curved slots forming hooks N, which hook upon clamping-bolts O, secu red to the upper parts of the widened middle parts of the curved bars K. Vith this construction the clamping-bolts 0 will clamp the upper ends of the standards M with sufficient force to hold the plows against the resistance of the soil under ordinary circumstances, but will allow the said standards to swing back, and thus prevent the plows from being broken should the said plows strike an obstruction.
The lower parts of the standards M are made round, and have screw-threads formed upon them to receive the nuts P, secured by rivets or other suitable means to the plows Q. J amnuts It are screwed upon the standards M above and below the nuts P, so that the plows Q can be adjusted higher or lower, or to throw the soil toward or from the plants, by adjusting the said nuts P R.
At the inner sides of the forward plows Q are placed fenders S, to prevent small plants from being covered or injured by soil, lumps, or clods thrown by the said plows.
The fenders S are attached to the rear en ds of the bars T, which are bent outward and then forward, and are pivoted at a little distance from their forward ends, by bolts U, to the sides of the forward parts of the beams J. against the sides of which rest the forward ends of set-screws WV, passing in through keepers X, attached to the sides of the beams J, so that the fenders S can be readily adjusted at any desired distance from the ground.
To each beam J is bolted the forward end of a handle, Y, which is supported at the desired height by a brace, Z, secured atits lower end to the said beam J and at its upper end to the said handle Y. Several holes are formed in the braces Z to receive the fastening-bolts, so that the handles Y can be readily adjusted as the height of the plowman may require.
To the upper sides of the plow-beam J are attached staples or eyebolts a, to hook upon books I) attached to the rearwardly-projecting ends of the parts 0 of the tongue, to support the plows away from the ground when turning around,and when passing from place to place.
The parts 0 of the tongue are secured to the upright parts of the axle B by clips (I or other suitable means. The parts c of the tongue incline toward each other, and are attached at their forward ends to the forked rear end of a short tube, 6, through which the rod f passes. The rod f is secured in place by the set-screw g, which passes in through-the side of the tube 6 and rests against the side of the rod f, so that the said rod can be moved forward or back by loosening the set-screw g to adjust the length of the tongue to the length of the horses. The forward end of the rodfis swiveled to the bend of a U-strap or clevis, h, to and between the ends of which is hinged the center of a neck-yoke, i, so that the said neckyoke will have the necessary play.
To the axle 13, between the hubs of the wheels A and the outer ends of the sleeves G, are attached clipsj, to the forward ends of the yokes of which are hinged the rear ends of the jointed rods or short chains 70. The forward ends of the jointed rods or short chains k are hinged to the lower ends of the hanging bars Z. The upper ends of the hanging bars Z are hinged to the ends of the crossbar m, the middle part of which is secured by bolts, clips, or other suitable means to the parts 0 of the tongue.
Upon the upper side of the middle part of the cross-bar m is placed a spiral spring, a, or other suitable spring, to the ends of which are prevent the tugs, hame-tugs, hame-straps, or
plows from being broken.
The connection between the axle B and the parts 0 of the tongue is strengthened against side draft by the braces t, the upper ends of which are connected with the .said parts 0 of the tongue by a rod, to, a long bolt, or other suitable means. The lower ends of the inner braces t are attached to the horizontal parts of the axle B at the inner ends of the sleeves O, and the inner ends of the outer braces tare attached to the clips j, as shown in Fig; 1.
I am aware of the hitching device compris. ing a rope passed over spring-pulleys supported upon the tongue and upon the axle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a cultivator, the combination, with the parts 0 of the tongue, of the tube 6, the adjustable rod f, the set screw 9, and the swiveled neck-yoke clevis or strap h, substantially as herein shown and describcd,whereby the tongue can be readily lengthened and shortened, as set forth.
2. In a cultivator, the combination, with the plow-beam J and the fender-bars T, having hooks V, of the pivot-bolts U, the keepers X, and the set-screws W, substantially as herein shown and described,whereby the fenders can be readily adjusted and will be securely held, as set forth.
3. In a cultivator, the combination, wit-h the draw rods or chains 70, the hanging bars I, having pulleys g, the cross-bar m, having pulleys p, and the chains 0, of the spring a, substantially as herein shown and described.
