o. B. PERKINS. COMBINED PI'RBPLAGE LINING ANDANDIRON SUPPORT.
Patented Sept No. 545,531.- E@ /TR OLIVER B. PERKINS, OF MARQUEZ, TEXAS.
COMBINED FIREPLACE-LINING AND ANDIRON-SUPPORT.
` SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 545,531, dated September 3, 1895.
Application tiled December 18, 1894. Serial No. 532,222. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER B. PERKINS, a citizen ot' the United States, residing at Marquez, in the county of Leon and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Combined Fireplace-Lining vand Andiron- Support, of which the following is a specification.
r1he invention relates to improvements in fireplaces.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of fireplaces andto provide an adjustable lining and andironsupport, which may be readily arranged to 'accommodate it to the ordinary construction of fireplace.
The invention consists in the construction and novel comblnation and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustratedA sections or plates 4 and 5, slidinglyconnected,
and adapted to be decreased and diminished in length to suit the size of the chimney to which the lining is to be applied. The section 4 is provided atits upper andlower edges with opposite flanges 6, forming Ways receiving the upper and lower edgesof the other section 5, and each section is provided at its bottom with a depending substantially L- shaped foot 7, the horizontal portion of which is designed to be secured beneath the hearth or brickworl; of the ordinary construction of chimney.
The sides 2 are connected with the back by L-shaped knees or plates 8 secured to the inner ends of the sections 4 of the sides 3 and to the ends ot' the back v2 andlocated adjacent to the top of the lining and adapted Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional v to support the upper portion thereol` at the back of the fireplace. v
The front portion of the lining is supported by an adjustable bar 9,disposed horizontally at the front of the fireplace and detachably connected at its ends with the outer sections of the sides 2. The sides 2 are provided with horizontal ways 10 on their inner faces, and the ends of the horizontal bar 9 are provided with angularly-disposed plates 11, fitting in the ways 10 of the sides 2 and forming slides. The horizontally-disposed bar 9, besides bracing the lining, serves as a support for andirons or iredogs 12, and it is composed of two adjustable sections 13 and 14, the section 13 being provided with a longitudinal slot 15 andthe other section carrying thumb-screws 16, located in the slot 15, and adapted to secure the sections of the oar 9 at any desired adjustment to suit the width of the replace. The andirons 12 are substantially L-shaped and are provided at their angles With slots 18 to receive the sections of the bar 9, and they are adapted to be adjusted on the latter between the inner ends of the sections and the plates 11. The front vertical portions of the redogs or andirons extend upward, and the inner terminals of the horizontal portions are provided With depending lugs forming feet.
The andirons are connected near their upper ends by a horizontal bar 19, provided with slots 20, receiving L-shaped arms 21, extending rearward from the vertical portions of the andirons. The slots 2O are provided at the lower edge of the connecting-bar 19 with entrance-openings to permit the horizontal portions of the L-shaped arms 2l to beinserted in the longitudinal slots 20. After the arms 21 have been inserted in the longitudinal slots the andirons may be adjusted to set them in the desired position, and the connecting-bar 19 serves as a fender to prevent logs from falling outward and to prevent children from falling into the fire.
It will be seen that the lining for fireplaces is simple and comparatively;inexpensive in construction and may be readily adjusted to i suit the size of a chimney; that it is adapted to be applied to old replaces as well as new ones, and that when applied to old ones itin- IOO creases the size ot the fireplace, for the reason that the metal plates orseetions of the lining are much thinner than fire-brick. It will also he apparent that the means for supporting the front of the lining also serves as a snpport for the andirons and enables themto be readily adjusted. This construction also provides a clear space at the bottom of the {ireplaee for the removal ot' ashes.
Changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages ot this invention.
I. The combination with a lining provided on the inner faces of its sides with horizontal Ways, andirons provided at their fronts with openings, and a horizontal bar passing through said openings and supporting the andirons, and provided at its ends with horizontal slides arranged in said ways and adapted to he moved inward and outward, Wherehy the andirons are adjustable, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a lining provided at opposite sides with horizontal ways, andirons provided at their fronts with openings and having L-shaped arms arranged at their tops, a horizontal bar passing through said openings and supporting the andirons, and provided with slides arranged in said ways, and the top connecting bar having longitudinal slots and provided with transverse entrance slots to permit the arms to beinserted into the slots, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afxed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
OLIVER B. PERKINS.
