Description

ALBERT & SHANK.
Sheep Holder for Shearing. No. 54,479. Y Patentedfllay 8, 1866-.-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
O. ALBERT, OF HARRISVILLE, AND J. J. SHANK, OF WEST SALEM, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHEEP- HOLDERS FOR SHEARING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 54,479, dated May 8, 1866.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that we, 0. ALBERT, of Harrisville, in the county of Medina-and State of Ohio, and J. J. SHANK, of West Salem, in the county of WVayne and State of Ohio, have in vented certain newv and useful Improvements in a Sheepdiolder, Tag-Table, 850.; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and complete description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making apart of this specification, in which- Figure l is a top View of the holder and tag-table. Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the views.
A represents a table secured on cross-pieces B and supported on legs or standards B. U is a shaft that has its bearings in the pieces B. The ends of this shaft extend beyond the ends of the table, as represented, where it is enlarged, a shoulder being formed, as at c. On the upper part of the shaft, against one of these shoulders, is secured a curved metallic piece, F, with notches round on the outside,
in which pawls b, pivoted to the frame, catch. The notches turn each way from the middle, and there is a pawl on each side that, catching into them, holds the shaft as it is turned more or less in either direction. In the ends 0 of the shaft are secured curved metallic arms D, the ends of which project over the table, and in the ends are slots 0, to which straps d are connected, that are formed into loops d at one end, as represented.
m is a leather strap fitting loosely around one end of the shaft, the ends of which are buckled in the ordinary way, whereby it can be buckled'looser or tighter.
In using this table and holder the sheep is placed upon it on its back, when its feetare put through the loops (1 of the straps d, which hold them, and the head is laid down on the shaft and the strap m buckled over the neck, holding the head down in the desired manner. As the sheep is being sheared it can be turned over more or less by turning the shaft toward either side, the pawls b and ratchet-teeth holdin g the shaft in the position to which it is adjusted. As the arms I) turn with the shaft the legs are brought'round with the head and body, thereby not straining or hurting any part of the sheep, and it is turned over in the most convenient and desirable position for shearing.
What we claim as our improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The shaft 0 0, arms (1, loops (1, strap m, in combination with the ratchet-plate F, pawls I), and table, arranged in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
0. ALBERT.
Witnesses: J. J. SHANK.
