TOILET-PAPER HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 544,588, dated August 13, 1895.

Application filed February 5 1895. Serial No. 537,376. (No model) T0 a/ZZ whom t may concern- Be it known that I, WILLIAM LoUIs PAT- 'rIANI, of Alameda, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Toilet-Paper Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to a toilet-paper holder, and has for its object to provide a casein which the paper may be placed in sheets, and wherein the paper will be straight and in proper position to be conveniently removed, and whereby also the case, when not in use, may be folded up-compactly against any convenient support, being at that time entirely out of the way, and whereby the case maybe expeditiously vand conveniently opened, the paper being held smooth and in package'form until the case is in position to have the paper removed therefrom. v

Another object of the invention is to provide a case or holder for toilet-paper which will be exceedingly simple, durable, and economic, and capable of being manipulated by any person of lordinary intelligence.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views. A

Figure 1 is a perspective View of the improved case or holder closed. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the case or holder open; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the case or holder when closed, as shown in Fig. 1.

In carrying out the invention the case or holder A is preferably of box-like construction, and may be given any shape that fancy may dictate. Usually, however, it is made square or polygonal, and the said case or holder at one. of its sides is connected by means of hinges 10 with a wall 11 or other perpendicular support, or the case may be provided with a cover 12 hinged thereto, in which event the cover is secured -to the wall or other perpendicular support through the medium of screws 13 or their equivalents, and

this latter construction is that which is shown in the drawings.

The toilet-paper 14 is loosely placed in the case or holder, and the drop of the case may be limited by means of a chain 15, cable, or

the equivalent attached to the support or vision should be made to maintain the sheets in proper order within the case during the act of closing and while the case is closed, and that the same device shall hold the sheets in regular order until the case or holder has practically resumed its normal position or is fully open.

The sheets are maintained in the order above stated through the medium of aspring 16, which may be of any desired shape. The spring shown in the drawings comprises two limbs 17 and 18, arranged at angles to one another, and at the junction of the limbs the spring is coiled upon a support located upon the inner rear surface of theholder or case, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The forward limb 18 ofY the spring is longest and is free, while the rear and shorter limb 17 is secured to the support 11 when the case or holder is attached directly to the support, or when the cover 12 is employed this limb is attached to the cover, the attachment being through the medium of a clip through which the said limb may freely pass. When the case or holder has been carried to-its vertical or closed postion-it is held closed through the medium of a latch 19 of any approved construction located within theholder and fitted for engagement with a keeper 20, located on the support 11 or the cover 12.

vIn the operation of the device, when the case has been partially closed and the sheets of paper are brought to a position which would cause them to fold over at the top, the forward and free limb 1S of the spring-holding device-Will have engaged with the uppermost sheets and as the said cover is fully closed the said limb will exert such tension on the sheets, of paper as to preserve them in proper order, .as illustrated in Fig. 3, and upon open- IOO . ing the case or holder the sheets are kept under tension by the spring 16 until the said holder is almost fully open, at which time the spring will automatically disengage from the sheets and they maybe readily removed from the case.

A knob 2l is located at the upper outer portion of the case or holder, and in opening the holder it is simply necessary to pull forwardly on the knob.

It Will be understood that the device may be utilized as a holder for photographs, engravings, dye., and that the spring need not depend on the support shown at the back of the holder or upon the sliding contact for effective Working.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a toilet paper or other holder, a box or case adapted to receive sheets of paper, and provided with hinges for attachment to a su pport, and a tension device, located Within the case and adapted for engagement With the sheets of paper within the case when said case is closed, and While it is being closed,as and for the purpose specified.

2. The combination, with a support, of a case adapted to hold sheets of paper, engl-av ings, dce., and having a hinged connection with the support, whereby the said case may be carried to a horizontal or to a vertical position, andqa spring tension device, consisting of a spring attached to the inner portion of the case, one member of the spring having guided movementupon the support, the other member beingadapted for engagement with the paper when the case is closed or partially closed, as and for the purpose specified.

3. The combination, with a support, of a case adapted to contain sheets, and having a hinged connection with the support, and capable ot being carried to a closed vertical position or a horizontal open position, atension device consisting of a spring secured to the hinge portion of the case within the same, the said spring having one of its members in sliding engagement with the snpportand another member free for engagement with the paper, the two members being at angles to each other, the said spring being so located as to exert tension on the sheets of paper While the case is closed and while partially open, and a latch device, substantially as de scribed, holding the said case in closed position, as and for the purpose set forth.
