RICHARD JACKs, CE QUINCY, CALIFORNIA.
BAN DAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 544,062, dated August 6, 1895. Application filed December 15. 1894. Serial No. 531,966. (No model.)
.To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD JACKs,a citizen of the United States, residing at Quincy, in the county of Plumas and State of California, have invented a new and useful Sanitary Hood, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a sanitary hood or night-cap adapted to be worn in sleep to hold the mouth closed and cause breathing to be accomplished through the nostrils, or in accordance with nature, and, furthermore, toprovide improved means whereby the lower jaw is held in a natural position without unnecessary restraint and without interfering with opening the mouth when it is desirable.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description, and the novel featuresV thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims. v
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hood embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear view. Fig. 3 is a view of the frame relieved of the fabric and connections which are attached thereto. Fig. 4 is a detail vertical section through the chin-pad and the contiguous portions of the hood.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a head or temple loop, preferably formed of wirehaving sufcient pliability to provide for bending to accurately conform tothe shape of the head ofthe wearer, and hinged or pivotally connected to the extremities of the said loop or the sides of a horizontal or chin loop 2, the free ends of which are adapted to approach each other at the back of the lower portion of the head or neck. The pivotal connection between the temple-loop and the chin-loop is formed by interlocking eyes 3 and 4 in the wire forming said loops. The temple-loop is provided at each side with an additional eye 5 and the chin-loop is provided in front of its pivotal point with similar eyes 6, and connecting the temple loop with the chin-loop in advance of its pivotal point, and attached at their extremities to said eyes 5 and 6, are the contractile or' elastic straps 7. The rear portion of the frame thus constructed is provided with a covering 8 of fabric to envelop the rear portion of the head of the wearer, said covering being .secured at its front edge to the temple-loop and at its lower edge to the portion of the chin-loop in rear of its pivotal point. Adjusting cords or tapes 9 are attached to the rear ends of the horizontal or chin loop and additional cords or tapes 10 are secured to the covering near the top thereof, said cords or tapes being adapted to be tied at the rear of the neck and head, respectively, to cause the covering to t the head snugly and prevent the hood from slipping lforward.
Attached at its upper end to the center of the front portion of the chin-loop is a chin- .pad 11 adapted to bear against the chin ofthe wearer and .thus form a cushion to avoidinconvenience or discomfort, said pad bemg held to its place by means of a supportingapron 12. This apron is divided at its center to form the opposite side iaps of curtains 12a and 12b, having the upper and lower cords or tapes 13 and 14, which extend through keepers 15 and 16 on the outer side ofthe pad and are adapted to be tied to support the pad with the desired pressure against the chin of the wearer.
When the parts are adjusted to cause the pad to bear with an easy and firm pressure against the chin, the lower jaw of the Awearer is held in its natural position without muscular eifort, whereby when the muscles are relaxed, as in sleep, the fallingof the jaw is prevented. At the same time the wearer may open the mouth by overcoming the resistance oered by the contractile or elastic straps which connect the chin to the templeloop'.
The sanitary advantages to be derived by maintaining the mouth closed and breathing through the nose in sleep are too well known to require enumeration, it being an acknowledged fact that many of the pulmonary troubles and diseases are due to breathing through the mouth in sleep, and it being an incontestable fact that it is this breathing through the mouth which causes snoring and results in dryness of the throat, the mouth, and lips.
It will be obvious that the covering, pad, apron, and similar parts of the hoodr may be made of any desirable fabric or IieXible ma- IOO terial, either plain or ornamental, to suit the taste of the wearer.
In practice various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction maybe resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. In a device ot' the class described, the combination ot' a frame having a temple-loop, adapted to extend over the front of the head, a chin-loop having its sides pivotally connected atintermediate points to the extremities of the temple-loop, and adapted to extend around the back of the head, a contract ile or elastic strap connecting the front portion of the chin-loop with the sides ot' the temple-loop, to hold the loops normally in perpendicular planes, and a pad carried by the chin-loop to support the lower jaw oi' the wearer, substantially as specified.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a frame h'aving temple and chin-loops, and means for securing them upon the head of a wearer, of a pad to support the lower jaw of the wearer, an apron attached to the chin-loop for supporting the pad, and means for vertically adjusting the intermediate portion of the apron to vary the pressure of the pad, substantially as specified.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with connected temple and chinloops, and means for securing them to the head of a wearer, of .a pad to support the lower jaw of the wearer, an apron having opposite flaps connected at. their outer ends to the chin-1oop and extending under the pad,` keepers or loops on the outer surface of the pad, and cords or tapes attached to the free edges of the fiaps, extending through said keepers or loops, on the pad and adapted to be tied beneath to support the pad in the desired position to exert the requisite pressure against the jaw, substantially as specified.
4. In a device of the class described, the
, combination of pivotally connected temple and chinloops constructed ot pliable metal, whereby they may be bent to conform to the head of tbe wearer, contractile or elastic straps connecting the front portion of the chin-loop to an intermediate part of the temple-loop, means for securing said loops in operative positions upon the head, and a pad carried by the chin-loop for supporting the lower jaw, substantially as specified.
5. The combination of a temple-loop, a chin-loop pivotally connected at its sides to the extremities of the temple-loop and extending in rear thereof, cords or tapes at tached to the extremities of the cl1in-loop and adapted to be tied in rear ot the head of the wearer, contractile or elastic straps connecting the front portion of the chin-loop to an intermediate part of the temple-loop, a pad supported by the chin-loop to bear against the lower jaw, a covering of fabric attached at its front edge to the temple-loop and at its lower edge to the rear portion of the chinloop, and cords or tapes for taking up the laek ot the covering, substantially as speci- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto ailxed my signature in the presence ot two witnesses.
