Description
WILHELM & LARIMORE. Lamp Chimneyiifier. No. 54,239. I Patented April 24, 1866.1

Nrran STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. WILHELM AND JAMES W. LARIMORE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
LAMP-CHIMNEY LIFTER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 54,239, dated April 24, 1866.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN H. WILHELM and JAMns W. LARIMORE, of Chicago, in the county of Cook, in the State of Illinois, have invented an Improved Lamp-Chimney Litter; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a perspective representation of our improved lam p-chimney litter adjusted as used upon the chimney. Fig. 2 is alongitudinal elevation of the same.
The object of our invention is to provide a convenient device of simple construction by means of which the hot chimney can be easily and safely taken off and put on the lamp.
The importance of our invention will be readily comprehended when it is known that a large portion of the accidents that occur in the use of kerosene-lamps result from the difficulty experienced in handling the chimney When hot. In our invention we claim to have obviated this difficulty, so that a hot chimney can be handled with the same safety as when cold.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will describe the method of constructing and operating the same.
B represents the arms, A the hands, and l 2 3 4 5 the, fingers, which constitute the principal features of our device.
We take any thin flexible metallic plate of convenient size, and by means ofthe common die cut the litter the shape required, and by the use of a swage make the hands A hollow on the inside, so as to fit the bulge of the chimney. The arms are then bent around a form of the proper shape to make the circular spring 0. The spring D is then attached to the arm B by means of rivets or solder, for the purpose of opening the arms B B when removing the lifter from the chimney. The fingers 1 2345 are then bent so as to grasp the bulge of the chimney.
The lifter represented in the drawings may be used for two orthree sizes of chimneys, and by making two or more sizes of the lifter any ordinary lamp-chimney may be handled.
Operation In order to use our device all that is required is to grasp the arms B and place the hands A on the bulge of the chimney,
pressing the arms gently together. The chimney may then be lifted off. The replacing of the chimney requires no additional explanation'.
We are aware of'the patents of A. H. Merrill and George .Asmus, the one having an apparatus which passes over the lamp-chimney, and the other two pieces of cork or other similar substance secured to springs which grasp the chimney; hence we disclaim both of these inventions.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The hands A A, secured to the arms B B, when said hands are provided with fingers 1 2 3 4. 5, so arranged that the chimney is securely held in said hands and between said fingers in the vertical position in which it is grasped, substantially as herein specified.
