Description

Wflnesses.
(No Model.) I
J. G. SHAPT'O. BRIDLE.
No. 541,950. Patented July 2, 1895.
a/llnl J4, WW
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JOHN GOODRIDGE SHAFTO, OF DUPONT, NEW JERSEY.
BRIDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 541,950, dated July 2, 1895.
Application filed March 2, 1895- To aZZ whom,- z't may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN GOODRIDGE SHAFTO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dupout, in the county of Monmouth and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bridles or Halters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The invention relates to bridles and halters which are employed to hold unruly horses when they are being dosed with medicine by veterinary surgeons or to be held securely for any other purpose.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view, showing my invention applied; and Figs. 2, 3, and 4 detail views of the several parts.
In the drawings, A representsthe upper, B the middle and O the lower portion of the halter. The upper part A contains the browband a, forehead strap a, headstrap a and throat latch a the headstrap and throat-latch passing through loops a a of the browband and forehead straps or a.
The middle portion B of the halter consists of a frontal cross-strap b, an upwardly extending buckle b on each end, to engage the perforated ends of the strap a and a middle $erial No. 540,305. (No model.)
buckle Z7 to engage with the perforated end of the strap a. On the under side are arranged the two buckles b b to engage with the upward perforated straps c c on the nosepiece 0. The piece O about the nostrils, is provided with a ring D in front to which is attached a rope, chain or leather strap to be held in the hand of the horseman; also with the buckles c c on its ends to engage the perforated ends of the mouth-piece E.
In breaking and training young horses, in handling stallions during the season of standing when they are liable to be hard to manage, in holding unruly horses when they are to be shod or physicked, my halter will be found to be a great desideratum.
Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understanding of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
A halter consisting of the three portions A, B, O, the portion A having the browband a, throat latch a and straps a a a connecting with buckles on portion B, the latter connected by buckles and straps with the portion 0,, and the portion O provided with a front halter ring D and a rear mouthpiece E, all substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN GOODRIDGE SHAFTO.
