GEORGE W. DEVIN, OF O'ITUMWA, IOWA.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 54,127, dated April 24, 1866.

To all ywhom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. DEVIN, of Ottumwa, in the county of Wapello and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stock-Marks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature ot" my invention consists in the employment of a small labeled plate secured to the ear ofthe animal by means of a headed rivet, the peculiar nat-ure of which will be hereinafter described.

In the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication, A represents a plate or disk which has inscribed upon its outer face the name and residence of the party owning the animal, or any other information which it may be desirable for it to contain. This plate or disk is provided with a small hole at its center for receiving the end of a rivet.

a represents a small rivet which is provided at one end with a head which is made Hat 011 its inner face. This rivet is made sufficiently long to extend through the ear ofthe animal.

The rivet has near its outer end a shoulder formed upon it, the end of said rivet being made smaller than its body. The small end of the rivet passes through the opening` or hole in the center of the plate or disk A. Said plate or disk,iitting snugly against the shoulder upon the rivet, is always separated from the tlat head ot' the rivet the required distance.

When it is desired to secure this .label upon an animal the ear is first perforated with a small punch, the rivet is then inserted from the inside of the ear, and the plate A placed upon its end being upon the outside of the ear. -The end of the rivet is then clinched,`

and the label thus permanently secured to the animal.

It will readily be seen that when the rivet is made sufficiently long between its shoulder and its head to pass through the ear that the ear will be free from all pressure after the end ofthe rivet has been clinched. The length of the rivet will, ot' course, vary with the thickness ot' the ear of the animal it is intended to be used upon.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
