IMPROVEMENT IN S'AFETY-POCKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 50,582, dated October 24, 1865. I
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GIBBQNS G. HICKMAN, of Downingtown, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have made a new and useful Improvement in Safety-Pockets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the nature, construction, and operation of the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawing, which is made part of this specification, and in which my improvement is represented in elevation and section, a portion being removed .to expose the working parts.
My invention consists of a nut or burr upon the piston which depresses the latch of the lock, which operates when screwed down upon the frame to prevent the said depression of the piston and the unlocking of the pocket.
To enable one skilled in the branch of manufacture to which myinvention is allied to construct and use the same, I will proceed to describe it.
A A are thejaws of the frame, to which the pocket B is attached. 0 are metallic strips sewed into the pocket to prevent its being cut open. D is the catch in one jaw, and E the latch in the other jaw. To the latch is attached a piston, F, which, protruding upwardly through the plate ofth'ejaw, atfords the means of depressing the latch when required. On the piston F is a nut or burr, G, which, when screwed down against the jaw, prevents the depression of the latch. When the nut is elevated to the end of the piston F the latter is allowed to perform its ordinary functions.
The purpose of the improvement is to prevent the ordinary tampering with the pocket by rendering necessary a certain adjustment of the parts before the latch can be operated by the usual depressor.
Havingdcscribed my invention, whatI claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I A safety-pocket closed by a spring-catch, said catch being secured by a screw, substantially as herein shown and described.
