C. 8u A. HERSHE'Y.
MATCH BOX.
Patented June 18, 1895.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CARLTON HERSHEY AND ANDREW HERSHEY, OF ALLENDALE, ILLIN 01S..
MATCH-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 541,232, dated June 18, 1895.
Application n'led March 29. 1895.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that we, CARLTON HERSHEY and ANDREW HERSHEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Allendale, in the county of lVabash and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Match-Box, of .which the -following is a specification.
The inveiitiou relates to improvements in match boxes. v
The objects of the present invention are to improve the construction of match boxes, and to enable a match to be extracted and ignited, and to provide a shield for the same, to prevent wind from extinguishing the match.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a match-box constructed inaccordance With this invention and shown closed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same, the cap being removed and the cover of the matchreceptacle being detached. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal sectional View, the parts Fig. 4 is a sectional View on line 4 4. of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a similar view on line 5 5 of Fig. l. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective View of the match-igniter. Fig. 7 is a detail sectional View of the lower portion of the match-box.
Like numerals of reference indicate correspending parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a substantially rectangular casing, provided with an inner lining2 forming a match receptacle, which is open at the front, at 3, and which has arranged on it, a cover 4, to retain the matches within the receptacle. The casing has mounted on it. a sliding extractor 5, substantiallyrectangular in cross-section, and consisting of similar sides and a back, and forming a shield for the extracted match, to prevent wind from blowing it out after it has been ignited. The
sides and back of the extractor slide in the space between the casing 1 and the lining 2, and the sides carry a match engaging crosspiece 6, located at the bottom of the extractor, and adapted, when the extractor is drawn out, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the accompanying Serial No. 543,683. (No model.)
drawings, to carry with it a match and to force the same through a discharge opening 7.
At the discharge opening 7 isv located a spring actuated jaw 8. which is hngedly mounted at the top of the casing, and which is adapted to engage the head of a match, to ignite the same. A curved plate 9 is secured to the casing, and is located in rear of the spring actuated jaw, and is adapted to support the head of-a match, in order that the jaw may exert the necessary friction to ignite a match as the head passes between it and the plate.l The jaw is provided with an eye, for the reception of a pintle, around which the actuating spring is coiled, and an arm or handle 10 extends outward from the jaw, in order that the latter may be swung backward when it is desired to extract a match without igniting the same.
The top of the combined extractor and shield is provided with antopening 11 located directly above the discharge opening of the' casing, and adapted to permit a match to pass through it when the extractor is returned into the easing. The back ofthe extraetoris provided y with perforations 12, to enable the match to burn freely within the extractor and shield. As soon as the extractor is returned into the casing, another match drops into position so as to recharge the extractor.
In order to prevent any injury to the match engaging cross-piece, when the extrae` tor is drawn outward, with a sudden jerk, necessary to ignite a match, the extractor is provided at its sides with stops or shoulders 13, which engage corresponding shoulders 14. of the casing. The shoulders 13 are located at the lower end ofthe combined extractor and shield, while those of the casing are located at the top. The match engaging cross-piece is arranged contiguous to the back of the lining of the casing, and extends through longitudinal openings at opposite sides of the lining.
The extractor projects slightly beyond the casing, in order that it may be readily grasped to draw it outward and the cap 15 fits over the top of the casing, and the extractor, and engages the upper end of the cover 4, and retains the latter in position. The covert may be readily removed, when it is desired to provide the match receptacle with matches.
It will be seen that the match box is sim- IOO ple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, that itA is capable of enabling a match to be readily extracted, and that `it shields the matches from the wind after they have been ignited, to prevent them from being accidentally extinguished; y
Changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention. 4
That we claim is- Y 1. In a match box, the combination of a casing having a match receptacle, a combined match extractor and shield slidingly mounted on the casing and extending around a match after the latter has been extracted from the receptacle, and an ignitingdevice for lighting the matches as they are extracted,- substantially as described.
2. In a match box, the combination of a casing havinga match receptacle, a match extractor slidingly mounted on the casing, and adapted to be drawn outward from a casing and to carry with it a match, said extractor being provided with a back and sides arranged to receive the extracted match and forming a shield for the Same, and an igniting device, substantially as described.
3. In a match box, the combination of a casing, provided with a lining forming a match receptacle, and providin gan intervening space between it and the casing, said casing being provided at its top with an opening to permit the passage of a match, a combined match extractor-and shield rectangulariu cross-section and slidingly mounted on the casing and lo.
cated in the space between the lining and the casing and provided with a match engaging f the opening of the casing, substantially as der scribed.
et. In a matchbox, the combination of a casing having a lining open at its front and forming a match receptacle, and a combined extractor and shield rectangular in cross section and provided with means for engaging a match and located in the space between the lining and the casing and projecting beyond the casing, a cover arranged on the front of the casing and extending over the opening of the lining, and a cap arranged o n the upper end of the casing and covering the extractor and shield and engaging said cover,- substantially as described.
5. In a match box, the combination of acasing, having a match receptacle, means for ignitin g matches, and a combined extractor and shield slidingly mounted on the casing and composed ot opposite sides and a perforated back and provided at its top with an opening located opposite the match discharge opening of the casing, substantially as described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses. n D
