TRAVELING-BAG.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 541,135, dated June 18, 1895,

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM FREDERICK WILLIAMS, of 32 Shaftesbury Avenue, London, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dressing and other Traveling Bags and Portmanteaus, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent in Great Britain, dated April 24, 1893, No. 8,266,) of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to top-fitted dressing or traveling bags in which toilet articles are usually inclosed beneath the hinged heads of the bag. The frames in which the said toilet articles are held are usually hinged in order that they may be thrown outward, to permit access to the body of the bag, and in this inverted position their contents are apt to fall out and are not conveniently accessible without impeding access to the body of the bag.

My invention has for its object to obviate this objection and enable access to be had both to the body of the bag and to the toilet fittings without removing the trays carrying the latter, from the bag, and the invention consists in making the said trays slide in opposite directions, so as to project beyond the sides of the bag body, the trays when in that position being supported in the horizontal position, as hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, forming part of' this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a dress-- in g-bag with trays or tray-carriers in position over the mouth of the bag. Fig. 2 is a crosssectional elevation of the bag, showing the trays slid out. Fig. 3 is a detail end view, partly broken away.

0 O are sliding tray-carriers in which, or in removable trays fitting therein, the toilet articles of various kinds are fitted, each in its own particular holder.

The tray-carriers C are adapted to slide along the end members or bars a of the bag mouth frame which may be made removable if desired, and with which they are engaged at each end by a metal flange c and a clip 61 projecting from the end of the tray-carrier O,

the flange resting on, and the clip engaging beneath, or in the channel of the bar a. The clip 61 extends only a short distance along the end of the carrier so as to hold it down on the frame a and act as a stop to limit the outward sliding motion.

The heads B are hinged at e to the extremities of the end members or bars a which are formed with hinge-knuckles and the frames B of the heads B have inwardly projecting flanges b, which, when the heads are opened out, come into line with, and form continuations of, the end members a of the bag mouth frame, so that when the traycarriers are drawn out over the heads B, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, they will be supported by their flanges a sliding on the flanges b of the heads. The flanges b carry the other hinge knuckles and are secured to the mainframes B of the heads by riveted studs or distance pieces I) at intervals, a space being left between the frames B and the flanges b, as usual, for the leather covering and lining, and so as to admit of the frames B of the two heads B overlapping one another in the ordinary manner when the heads B are closed.

It will be observed that by my invention I am enabled to produce a cheap, simple and elfective traveling bag wherein the trays can be readily moved from over the mouth of the bag and supported in a horizontal position to one side of the bag. of the heads the flanges I) come down upon the flanges c of the tray-carriers.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a traveling bag, the combination of a bag body, a bag mouth frame carried thereby, trays or tray-carriers connected with and adapted to slide on said frame, hinged covers for the bag, frames on said bag covers, whereby trays'or tray-frames can be slid upon the frames of the hinged covers and'be supported by said covers, substantially as described.
