J. C. PITTEE. ADJUSTABLE FUNNEL FOR STOVBS.

F rgl.
UNITED? STATES ATENT Fries,
JOSEPH C. PITTEE, OF CHELSEA, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSICNQR OF ONE-HALF TO ALFRED G. FULLER, OF SAME PLACE.
ADJUSTABLE FUNNEL FOR STOVES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 540,873, dated June 11, 1895 Application filed January 5 1 8 95 To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, JOSEPH O. PITTEE, of Chelsea, in the county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Funnels for Stoves, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said inventionfappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of. this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved funnel; Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section of the same, and Fig. 3 an end elevation.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
My invention relates especially to an adj ustable funnel for stoves whereby the obj ections incident to employing elbows of differentsizes to enter the funnel openings in the chimneys, which vary very appreciably in their distance from the floor, is obviated.
The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation.
In the drawings, A represents the vertical drum which is ordinarily employ ed on stoves of this class. The lower end of the drum is closed by a cap, 9. The upper end of the drum is closed by a removable cap, 01. In one face the drum has a branch,f, to take on the funnel-nipple, g, of the stove, B.
The rear Wall of the funnel proper or drum, A, is providedwith runs or ways, h, in which a series of leaves, 7), are fitted to slide. 7 One central leaf, 1?, is provided with a funnel nipple, m. These leaves have lap joints, p, and slide on each other being guided by their ends which are turned into the ways, h. This nip- Serial No. 533,9'78- (No model.)
ple, m, may be secured in the leaf, 2' by any suitable means. As thus arranged the plates may telescope so that a nipple, m, may be adjusted until it will register with the funnel opening in a chimney so that a straight pipe, D, may be employed in connecting the drum with said funnel opening.' A variation of at least three feet which is double that ordinarily required can thus be obtained. When used with a range where the funnel nipple, g, is on top' the opening, f, is closed by the cap, d, and the end'of the drum thus left open by the removal of said cap is applied to said nipple. 7
By hooking or lapping the joints between at, p, alternate leaves are in the same vertical plane thus requiring only one set of ways, h. Moreover the joints are thus rendered substantially smoke proof and will not leak. This is a salient feature of my invention as much less space is required to effect the result desired than in ordinary devices of this charactor and the necessity of using castings is avoided.
- Having thus explained my invention, What I claim is- The drum provided with the detachable cap; the vertical ways, h, in a wall of said drum; the leaves, 2', having their ends turned into said ways, the horizontal edges of alternate leaves being turned inward and overlapping the corresponding edges of the next adjacent leaf turned outward and'forming lap-joints, p, in such manner that allthe leaves of the series may slide vertically in two planes only; and the nipple, m, in one of said leaves, 'all being combined and arranged to operate substantially as specified.
