Description

(No Model.)
w. s. THAYERQ HARNESS ATTACHMENT.
No. 540,765. Patented June 11, 1895. v
NITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
.WILLIAM S. THAYER, OF OWEGO, NEW YORK.
HARN ESS ATTACHM ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 540,765, dated June 11, 1895.
Application filed February 4, 1895. fierial No. 537,235. (No model.)
the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide a device or swivel-clip to which the end of a trace may be conveniently connected and for other purposes to which an attachment of this character may be found useful in the construction of harness, and the invention consists in a device constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a perspective view of the device, showing it attached to the end of a trace; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the device, showing the loop partly broken away.
In the accompanying drawings A represents a flat metal shank or plate of any suitable length and width and having any desirable number of perforations a for attaching it to the end of the leather trace B, the layers of leather being disposed upon each side of the shank A which conceals said shank and is secured by riveting or by any other preferred and well known means.
The shank A terminates in a head 0, which head at the point of juncture with the shank forms a bearing shoulder around the end of the shank against whichabuts the ends of the layers composing the leather trace B. By means of the shoulder b against which the layers of leather abut, protects the edges thereof and prevents them from becoming worn, as would be the case were the layers of leather exposed. The head 0 terminates in a post 0 which forms the pivot for the loop D, said loop having a contracted opening at to form a seat for the end link of a heel or other chain, or for the staple of ahame to which said loop is attached. The contracted opening in the loop forms a better connection between it and the link or staple, and to strengthen the loop at its point of connection with the post 0, the loop is formed with a wide bearing 6. A hole is formed in the bearing through which the post extends, and after the post and loop are connected, they are held together by heading the post as shown at f.
The shank A, head 0 and post 0, and also theloop D, are cast in one and the same mold, thereby constructing the device of two parts in one casting, and materially lessening the cost of manufacture and producing a simple attachment for harness that will be within "reach of those harnessmakers requiring such a device.
Having now fully described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A trace-coupling comprising a shank for attachment between the two layers of the trace and having shoulders to abut against the ends of the trace, a projection therefrom formed into a head and a contracted neck, and a loop swiveled to the neck and having a contracted front portion, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM S. THAYER.
