HENRY GATIE, JR., OF NEV BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
WINDOW SHADE AND CURTAIN FIXTURE.
SEECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 540,355, dated J' une 4, 1895.
Application filed March 25, 1895. Serial No. 543.068. (N model.)
Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'in Vindow Shade and Curtain Fixtures, of which the following is a specification.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention, in which- Figure l is a view of my invention applied to a window-casing. Fig. 2 is a top view of one of the shade and curtain brackets. Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of the saine. Fig. 4. is an enlarged View, partlyin section, showing the construction of the extension rod which holds the shade and curtain brackets in position. Fig. 5 is a view in perspective of one of the brackets which supportthe pole on which the curtain-rings slide. Fig. 6 is a view showing in detail a part of the eXtension-rod.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the several views.
The letter a, indicates a tube, having a narrow longitudinal slot b', extending from one end, to nearly its whole length.
e, indicates a rod, secured in the outer end of the tube a, having a reduced portion e', provided with .notches e3, extending within the t-ube a, and having its outer end provided with the bearing e2.
a', indicates a tube, adapted to slide within the tube a, having the plug a2, secured in its outer end, and provided with the screw threaded rod d3. To one side of the tube ct, and near its outer end, is secured the spring wire d',- havng its free end bent downward, so as to pass through a hole in the tube a', immediately under said end, and enter one of the notches e3, in the rod e.
d, indicates a ring, adapted to slide on the tube a, and hold the bent end of the spring CZ', in engagement with the notches e3.
z', indicates a washer, screw-threaded to tit the rod a3. p
b, indicates a bracket, having the slides b2, and the boss g, said boss, having the perforation g', adapted to receive the rod a3.
c, indicates a shade bracket, adapted to be adjusted on the slides h2, and clamped in position, by the screw c2, and provided with the projection c', having a bearing for the end of the shade rod.
h, indicates a curtain pole bracket, having the clip h', adapted to be adjusted on the y slides h2, outside of the shade brackets c.
In operation, the extension rod, is adjusted to the width'of the window, by sliding the ring d, ott' from the spring catch d', and then sliding the tube a', into, or drawing it out of, the tube a, the required distance, when the ring d, is pushed over the spring catch d', which locks it in position. The .brackets b, are now adjusted, one, on the bearing e2, and the other, on the end of the rod d3, and the whole is placed in the desired position on the window casing. .The washer t', is then turned on the screw-threaded rod d3, untilit bears firmly againstthe end of the boss g, which motion, presses the brackets b, against the inside of the window casing, and secures them firmly in position. Theshade brackets c, are then adjusted on the slides b2, to accommodate the width of the shade, and clamped by the thumb-screws c2. The curtain pole brackets h, are then adjusted on the slides h2, outside of the shade brackets c, and the curtain pole, laid in the curve h2.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a window shade and curtain fixture, an extension rod, consisting of a tube, having a narrow longitudinal slot extending from one end to nearly its Whole length; a rod, secured in the outer end of said tube, havinga reduced portion provided with notches extending within said tube, and having its outer end provided with a bearing; a tube adapted to slide within said slotted tube, having a plug secured in its outer end, provided with a screw threaded rod extending outwardly and longitudinally therefrom, and having a spring wire secured to its side, adapted to lie in the slot of the outer tube, and havingits free end bent downward and adapted to catch in the notches of the rod secured in the end of the outer tube, when pressed downward; a ring, adapted to slide on said outer tube, and hold said spring in engagement with said notches;
IOO
and a screw threaded Washer adapted to turn on the screw-threaded rod projecting from to receive the end of the extension rod, and the end of said inner tube; as, and for the the slides b2, the shade brackets c, adapted to purpose, shown and described. be adjusted and clamped on said slides, and 2. In a window shade and curtain lixture, the curtain pole brackets h, adapted to be ad 5 in combination with an extension rod adapted justed on said slides, outside ot said brackets, x5
t0 be adjusted and retain its position between all as shown and described.
