Be it known that I, JOHN BEOK, of Portage, in the county of Cambria. and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Railroad-Cars; and I (10 hereby declare that the following is a full, eleax, and exact deseription of the invention, whieh will enable others skilled in the art to whieh it appertains to malte and use the same, referenee being had to the accompanying drawings, and t0 the letters 0f referenee marked thereon, whioh forma part of this speoifieation.

This invention relates to eertain improvements in railroad cars.

The objeot of the invention is 1:0 provide improvements in railroacl cars whereby a military er armed cai is provided capable 0f offensive operations against small 01' lauge bodies of enemies at long range 01 a1; elose quartexs.

The invention consists in eertain novel features 0f construetion and in eombinations 0f parts more fully and partieularly pointed out and deseribed hereinafter.

Referxing t0 the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspeetive of theimproved cm. Fig. 2is a vertieal cross-section. Fig. 3 is a horizontal seotion.

In the drawings a, is the strongly 0011- structed fioor 01 platform of the ear mounted on the usual wheels. This floor has the ends b b, strongly constructed and provided with doors if clesirable. The roof c, is also strongly construeted and braced and is earried by the ear ends.

The-m01": is preferably provided with atrap door, or openingf, through which the 00m1- pants of the oar can ascend from the interior to the roof for manning the cannon thereof.

The sides 0f the Gar are preferably, although not neoessarily open, and the lower portions thereof are proteoted by the Walls 0x shields g,at asuitable height. The proteeting Walls and the ear encls ean be pierced by port holes h Small oannon i, easily movable by band are arranged on the floor 0f the ear, so that they can be flred through the port holes as desired. It will be observed that such a 'car es he1e disolosed can be most effectively employed in offensive er defensive operations 011 steam railroads 0x in eities on street car traeks against bodies of hostile troops, 01' against rioters. The oar will shelter a eonsiderable number of armed men who ean use the large roof guns for long 01 short range and 02m also use the small interior guns t0 repel attaeks, or seatter bodies of hostile men.

If desired the ear ean be provided with swinging sides g t0 elose the openings therein during aotion. These doors er sides g can be hinged to the ear sides so es t0 be raised and lowered by suitable means, es cords and pulleys or the like. If desired these doors ean have 1oop holes. When desired t0 have the sides 0f the ear open seid swinging doors can be swung and fastened up out of the way. These swinging side proteetors are raised and lowered by the cords whieh when the doors are swung into the car to open the side ean be suitably seeured in this position by fixing the cords and can be dropped t0 gravity by releasing the eords. However, I do nob wish to 1imit myself t0 any specifio manner 0f mising and lowering 01 seouring these swinging sides.
