AMUSEMENT DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 738,581, dated September 8, 190 3. Application filed June 23, 1963. Serial No- 162,734. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK S. TERRY and CHARLES H. S. KIRTEN, citizens of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Amusement Devices, of which i the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
Our invention relates to improvements in amusementdevices; andit consists of the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter shown, described, and
and are braced throughout their entire length,
so as to form a solid, rigid, and substantial structure. Located on the top of said tower 1 is a roof 3, having a projecting hood 4 and a dome 5. Said roof, hood, and dome are supported by upright pieces 6, which are suitably mounted on and secured to the tower 1.
Secured to the upright I-beams 2 are horizontal I-beams 7. The inner ends of said horizontal I-beams 7 are secured to the upright I-beams 2 by means of right angular braces 8 and rivets 9. The outer ends of said horizontal I-beams 7 are braced and supported by means of I-beams 10. The upper ends of said I-beams 10 are secured to the outer ends of the horizontal I-beams 7 by means of angular outside brackets 11, rivets 12, inside brackets 13, and rivets 14. The lower ends of the I-beams 10 are secured-to the upright I-beams 2 by means of outside brackets 15 and inside brackets 16, the said brackets 15 and 16 being secured to the I-beams 10 and upright I-beams 2 by means of suitable bolts and rivets.
i 17 indicates braces composed of structural iron. Said braces 17 are provided with a horizontal portion 18, which tends to support and strengthen the inside endsof the I-beams 7. The ends 19 of the braces 17 are secured to the I-beams 10, and the other ends, 20, are secured between the brackets 16 and the upright I-beams 2. The said braces 17 are provided with body portions 21, which lie against and are bolted to the upright I-beams 2.
Mounted on top of the horizontal I-beams 7 and secured thereto in any suitable and mechanical manner is a flooring 22, and secured to said flooring is an inside banister structure 23 and an outside banister structure 24. Located between the inside banister structure 23 and the upright I-beams 2 is a track 25, suitably secured to the flooring 22, and located between the inside banister structure 23 and the outside banister structure 24 is another track, 26, the track 26 being longer and secured to the upright pieces of the banister structure 24 and on the inside thereof is a similar L-shaped third rail or guide-rail 29, the functions of which will be hereinafter set forth.
The horizontal I-beams 7, the I-beams 10, and the necessary braces and structure carried by the same are so located and attached to the upright I-beams 2 that a spiral and undulating floor is produced. In view of the fact that the tracks 25 and 26 are located on said floor, these tracks are spiral and undu- 1ating-that is to say, the inside track 25 is spiral and undulating from the top of the tower downwardly, and the outside track 26 is also spiral and undulating. That portion of the tracks 25 and 26 which passes as a tangent from the tower is provided with a tunnel 30. Said tunnel may be constructed of any suitable material and may be of any length. The undulating and spiral tracks 25 and 26 are continuous, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. 31 indicates the passenger cars, which are adapted to travel over said tracks 25 and 26. Said cars 31 are provided with U-shaped wheels 32, and located on the out side of each of the cars so adapted to travel over said tracks are guide and safety wheels 33. Said'guideand safety wheels 33 are U- shaped and are adapted to travel on the third rails 28 and 29. It is intended that the cars 31 travel over the spiral and undulating tracks 25 and 26 by their own gravity and momentum.
We will now proceed to describe the structure by and through which the said cars are enabled to be brought to the top of the tower 1.
34 indicates upright truss structures composed of structural iron. Said structures are braced throughout their length by braces 35. Located on the top of said truss structures 34 is a flooring, and located on the top of said flooring are the tracks 25 and 26 and banister structures 36. to the top of the tower by means of a cable 37, said cars being provided with any suitable grip to attach to said cable.
38 indicates a station where the passengers board the cars, it being noted in this connection that the spiral and undulating tracks 25 and 26 pass through said station, as illustrated in Fig. 2. The said tracks are provided with any desired number of passengercars. Said tracks also form a loop 39, which passes, as heretofore stated, through the station 38-that is to say, the tracks pass into one endof said station and pass out at the same end, as illustrated in Fig. 2. It will be noted in this connection that the entire amusement device is constructed of structural iron with the'exception of the station 38..
The two sets of spiral and undulating tracks 25 and 26 may have cars speeding down the same at the same time, and by properly handicapping the cars by varying the loads or the weight of the cars, in view of the fact that one car must travel a greater distance than the other--that is, the car on the outside track 26-a very exciting and sensational descent may be made. The safety-wheels 33, traveling on the third rails 28 and 29, are to prevent the cars from leaving the track by centrifugal force when going down the descent. When the cars have reached the lower part of the tower, it is intended that their The cars 31 are elevated or they can be taken up to the top of the tower by the elevators 4.0.
It is intended that within the base of the tower 1 there be a suitable pavilion.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to have secured to us by the grant of Letters Patent, is-
1. An amusement device, comprising a cone-shaped tower constructed of structural iron, a horizontal platform secured to said tower, two sets of spiral, undulating and continuous tracks of different lengths located 011 said platform over which passenger-cars are adapted to pass, and an L-shaped third rail mounted indirectly on said platform and adapted to be engaged by safety-wheels carried by the cars to prevent the same from leaving the track, substantially as specified.
2. An amusement device, comprising a cone-shaped tower constructed of structural iron, a horizontal platform secured to said tower, two sets of spiral, undulating and continuous tracks of different lengths located on said platform over which passenger-cars are adapted to pass, an L-shaped third rail mounted indirectly on said platform and adapted to be engaged by safety-wheels carried by the cars to prevent the same from leaving the track, and an inclined superstructure constructed of structural iron, by which the cars may be delivered at the top of the tower, substantially as specified.

An amusement device, comprising a cone-shaped tower constructed of structural iron, 'a horizontal platform secured to said tower, two sets of spiral, undulating and continuous tracks of different lengths located 'on said platform over which passenger-cars are adapted to pass, an L-shaped third rail mounted indirectly on said platform and adapted to be engaged by safety-wheels carried by the cars to prevent the same from leaving the WVitnesses:
