Be it known that I, JOHN WALTER HOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Roanoke and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oar-Replacers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices employed for replacing derailed cars, locomotives, and the like upon the track, and has for its object to improve the construction and increase the efliciency and security of devices of this class.
vWith these Iand other objects in View, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, thel same consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which corresponding` parts are denoted by like designating characters, is illustrated the preferred form of the embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation, it being understood that the invention is not necessarily limited thereto, as various changes in the shape, proportions, and general assemblage of the parts may be resorted to without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a transverse section of a railway-track with the improved rerailing or replacing blocks in position adjacent to the rails, with one of the replacer members in transverse section. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of one end of one of the replacer-blocks. Fig. 4 is a sectional detail illustrating' a modified construction of the rail-clamping bars.
The improved device comprises an inner replacing-block 10 and outer replacing-block 11, the inner block for bearing against the inner face of the rail 12 and the outer block for bearing against the outer face of the rail 13 and bearing upon the ties 21, the lower surfaces of the blocks being preferably provided with spurs 38 39 for entering the ties to prevent displacement when the strains are applied.
Each of the blocks is reversely inclined upon the upper face from end to end, terminating, respectively, at the outer edge in guard ribs or iianges 14 15 to receive the impact of the whleel-ianges and guide the wheels upon the rai s.
The inside block 10 is formed with a depression 16 adjacent to the inner face of the tread of the rail 12, while the outside block 11 is formed flush with the upper face of tread of the rail 13 at the central portion 17, as shown in Fig. 1, to guide the treads of the inside wheels upon the rail 12 and to guide the flanges of the outside wheels over the tread of the rail 13, as will be obvious.
The block members are of cast-steel, malleable iron, or similar suitable metal and formed hollow and provided with integral transverse webs Or stays, as shown at 18 in Fig. 3.
Extendingv from the block member 10 are two bars 19 20, integral with the block and below its lower line for projecting beneath the rail 12 between the ties 21. The bars are provided with spaced orifices 22 23 to receive holding-bolts 24 25, the plurality of apertures providing for the adjustment of the device to dilTerent-sized rails. The block member 11 is provided with similar bars 26 27, having spaced oriiices 28 29 to receive holding-bolts 30 31 for adjustably fastening to the rail 13. The bars 19 20 and 26 27 are preferably extended from one of the webs 18, as shown in Fig. 3, to increase the stability of the structure, or the bars may be formed separately therefrom and bolted to one of the Webs 18, as represented in Fig. L1.
A transversely-disposed diagonal brace 32 is disposed between the inner face of the rail 13 and the inner face of the block member 10 and supported near the upper part of the latter by a ledge 33. This brace-bar may be of wood or metal, as preferred, and very materially strengthens the device and decreases the tendency to overturn under the strains. The block members 10 11 are also provided, respectively, with notched toes 34 35 36 37 to receive holding-spikes by which to secure the blocks temporarily to the ties 21 when -required. By this simple arrangement of parts `1t is obvious that a very efficient replacer is produced which may be securely coupled to the rails and ties and braced from displacement laterally or from being overturned under the severest strains.
The block members may be of any desired size, but will generally be long enough to bear upon at least three of the ties 21.

A car-replacer comprising an outer and an inner replacing-block each provided with notched extensions to receive holding-spikes, and each having its upper face reversely inclined from end to end and each terminating at its outer side in a reversely-inclined stoprib, and a brace member bearing by its ends against the inner face of the inner block and the inner face of the opposite rail.
4. A car-replacer comprising an outer and an inner replacing-block each having its upper face reversely inclined from end to end and each terminating at its outer side in a reversely-inclined stop-rib, and said blocks each having spaced bars extending laterally for passing beneath the rails and provided with spaced apertures for receiving binding means for coupling adjustably to the rails and said inner block member provided with a stopledge upon its inner face, and a brace member supported by said ledge and bearing by one end against said inner block member and bearing by the other end against the inner face of the adjacent rail.
