Description
("No Model.)
B. P. BEAN.
DUMPING GAR. N0. 366,295. f I Patented July 12, 1,887.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN F. BEAN, OF PAWLING, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO MARTHA JANE BEAN, OF SAME PLACE.
DUMPINGA-CAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,295, dated July 12, 18187.
Application filed March 2,1881. Serial No. 229,447. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. BEAN. of Bawling, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Dumping-Oars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has reference to that class of dumping-cars which have hinged or falling doors at the bottom. In these cars it frequently happens during the winter season that the formation of ice will prevent the doors from falling when unlocked. It is the aim of my invention to provide, means which will admit of their being positively driven open when required.
To this end it consists, essentially, in providing one or more vertical tubes or passages leading downward from the top of the car to a point directly over the free edges of the doors, so that a rod, dumper, or other weight may be introduced through the tube to act upon the doors and drive them open.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation, and Fig 2 a crosssection, of a car providedwith my improvements.
In the drawings, A represents the body of the car; B, the sustaining-wheels, and O G the doors hinged at the lower edges of the converging walls, and forming the bottom of the car and provided with fastening devices in any ordinary or approved manner.
I) represents the tube or passage forming the subject of my invention. This tube may be made of wood or metal and arranged in any convenient position either at the center or at the side of the car, the only requirement being that its lower end shall terminate above the doors 0, and that it shall be formed in such manner as to admit of a rod or other weight descending therethrough to act upon the doors and drive them down. If desired, there may be two tubes, one at each side of the car. In cars which are provided with more than one door or pairs of doors there will be a come 5 spending number of tubes. I propose to provide the tube at its upper end with a lid or cover, E, for the exclusion ofsnow, rain, and dirt.
The tube may be modified in construction and arrangement as the peculiar construction of the car may require, the invention being substantially as described, adapted to permit I the application of a rod or weight to drive the doors downward.
2. In a dumping-car, the combination of the body, a hinged falling door at its bottom, and.
a vertical tube or passage extending from the top of the car downward and terminating directly over the door. a
3. In a dumping-car, the body, the hinged falling door at its bottom, the vertical tube or passage terminating immediately above the door, and the cap or cover for closing said passage.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 8th day of February, 1887, in the presence of two attesting witnesses.
BENJAMIN F. BEAN.
