of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. 1
My invention relates to an improvement in boots and shoes and has particular relation to that class of boot and shoe heels which are provided with detachable wear plates.
The object of the invention is to provide a guard for heels, comprising an attaching plate which is fastened to the heel proper and a wear plate held in removable yet locking engagement with the attaching plate; and a further object of the invention is to provide a means whereby the wear plate will be in terchangeable, that is, the wear plate of the heel of the right boot or shoe may be transferred to the heel of the left boot or shoe, or vice versa, enabling a plate to be worn down evenly.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the guard that the connection between the two parts thereof may be expeditiously and conveniently efiected.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures and letters of refer ence indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of a heel having theimprovement applied. Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, illustrating the two members of the attachment in looking engagement. Fig. 3 is a section taken practically on the line 3 3 of Fig. 4, illustrating the wear-plate as carried out of locking engagement with the attaching-plate, in order that the wear-plate may be removed. Fig. 4.- is a plan view of the attaching-plate. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the said plate, and Fig. 6 is a plan view of the wear-plate.
In carrying out the invention, the heel guard consistsvof what may be termed a wear plate A and an attaching plate B, the attaching plate being adapted for attachment to the leather portion of the heel C, and it is furthermore provided with means for holding in engagement with itself the wear plate.
The wear plate consists of a frame 1.0, substantially of horse-shoe shape, and a lift 11, of leather or like material contained within the frame and held in fast engagement with it. The lift fits the inner contour of the frame, which is provided preferably upon its bottom face with inwardly-extending flanges 12, serving to assist in preventing the lift from dropping downward, and upon the upper face of the frame an arm 13 is attached, or integrally constructed with it, extending from one side of the frame to the other and having a slight forward inclination. Preferably the said arm is somewhat angular, as shown in Fig. 6, being attached to the lift through the medium of screws 14, or like fastening devices. The arm 13 at its forward angular surface is provided with an upwardly-extending lip 15, which projects over a circular opening 16, made in the lift at the straight inner edge thereof. The wear plate frame is further provided upon its upper face at the central portion of its curved section, with a stud 17, undercut to form a head, as illustrated in Figs. 2, 3 and 6.
The attaching plate B, is provided upon the central portion of its upper face with a sliding frame 18, the said frame being of skeleton construction and having guided movement over a block 19, either integral with, or attached to the said plate.
The sliding frame 18, is provided with a .rearwardly-extending arm 19, and the said frame and arm jointly constitute 'a bolt adapted for engagement with the stud 17 of the wear plate when said stud shall have been entered through an opening 17 in the attaching plate, shown in Fig. 5. The locking section of the bolt is provided with a slot 20,
through which a screw 21 is passed into and 5 secured in the plate, constituting a guide for the said locking section; and where the looking section of the bolt connects with its frame or guide section a housing 22 is constructed,
as shown in both Figs. 4 and 5, and the un- IOO der surface of the locking section of the bolt adjacent to the housing, is provided with an inclined recess 23 leading into the housing.
Immediately beneath the block 19 on the top of the attaching plate a circular rib 24 is produced upon the under face of each plate, as illustrated in Fig. 5, having an opening 25 in that portion which faces the central upper edge of the plate. A disk 26, is held to revolve within the circular rib 24, and the disk is provided with openings 27 for the introduction of a wrench, whereby the disk may be revolved, and the disk is further provided with a peripheral recess 28, adapted in one movement of the disk to register with the opening 25 in the circular rib 24', as is also shown in Fig. 4:- A pin or screw 29, serves to pivot the disk upon the attaching plate, and the said pin or screw likewise carries at its upper edge a cam 30, which may be of any desired shape. Ordinarily, however, it is given a substantially heart contour, as shown in Fig. 4:. This cam has movement over the guide block 19 on the top of the wear plate and within the frame portion of the bolt; and at one throw of the cam the bolt will be carried forward, while at another throw of the said cam it will carry the bolt rearward, and when the bolt is carried forward, it is disengaged from the keeper stud 17 of the wear plate, and the recess 28 in the disk 26, will be in registry with the opening 25 in the flange surrounding the disk, as shown in Fig. 5.
A flange 32, is formed at the substantially straight or inner edge of the attaching plate, the said flange extending downward from its under face; and openings 33 are produced in the said plate in front of the disk 26, to receive the arm 13 of the wear plate, in order that the two plates may be brought close together.
In the operation of this device, the attaching plate remains a permanent fixture upon the heel, and in applying the Wear plate the disk 26 is brought to the position shown in Fig. 5, whereupon the bolt will be drawn inward away from the stud opening 17*, and the recess in the disk will face the opening in the rib or flange 24 surrounding it, and both recesses will then be in registry with the housing 22 on the bolt. It is now simply necessary to press the lift section against the attaching section or plate of the device, whereupon the lip of the wear plate will pass through the openings 25 and 28 in the flange and disk, and will enter the housing, while at the same time the keeper stud 17 will have passed upward through its aperture 17 in the attaching plate, and the arm 13 of the wear plate will have entered the openings 33 in the attaching plate. The parts will now be in the position shown in Fig. 3, and a looking of the two parts is effected by rotating the disk 26 preferably through the medium of a key introduced into its apertures 27 un til the cam 30 has carried the bolt to locking engagement with the head of the keeper post 17, at which time the solid portion of the disk will have passed under the lip 15 of the wear plate, holding the latter in the housing of the bolt. The locking position of the parts is clearly shown in Fig. 2.
Under this construction an attaching plate may be employed for a number of pairs of shoes, by being removed from a shoe when said shoe is worn out, and placed in another heel; and the wear plate will give a maximum of service, since when the plate is run down upon one side it can be transferred to the heel of the other shoe of a pair, and thus bring the unworn side into service.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A heel attachment substantially as described comprising an attaching section and a wear section, one of such sections having a pair of locking projections or catches, a bolt on the other section movable into engagement with one of such catches, a notched disk or plate arranged to secure the other catch and a cam operating the bolt and movable with said notched disk or plate whereby the bolt and disk or plate may be moved jointly into and out of locked position, substantially as set forth.
2. In a heel for boots or shoes, an attaching plate adapted to be permanently attached to a heel, provided with a bolt having a housing, and a cam adapted to reciprocate the bolt, and a wear plate provided with two keepers, one entering the housing and the other engaged by the bolt, as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a heel for boots or shoes, an attaching plate adapted to be permanently attached to the heel, provided with a bolt having a housing, and a cam adapted to reciprocate the bolt, a wear plate provided with two keepers, one entering the housing and the other engaged by the bolt, a disk connected with the cam, the wear plate being provided with an opening exposing said disk, which disk is also provided with T- openings and a peripheral recess adapted to register with the housing of the bolt, one of the keepers of the wear plate being passed into the housing through the peripheral opening in the disk, the said opening being so located that when the bolt is in locking engagement with the keepers the plain surface of the disk will be over the keeper passed through it, as and for the purpose specified.
A. A heel attachment comprising a section having a, pair of separate locking projections or catches, a second section, a bolt on said second section engaging one of said catches, a securing device also on said section securing the other catch and intermediate devices whereby said securing device and bolt operate dependently or jointly, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
