SAFETY-REIN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 539,894, dated May 28, 1895.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, JAMES FRYE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Reins; and I,do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention consists in certain new and useful i mprovements in safety reins for horses, as fully described hereinafter, and especially pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View showing the application of my device. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view similar to that shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged front elevation showing one of the principal features of my construction.

Referring to the drawings, A designates a bridle, comprising the-side straps a and 0b, the head straps a and a and the neck strap a The side straps are connected to the bit rings B in the ordinary manner, the bit ring also having attached thereto the reins C and O. Mounted upon the side straps a and a, some distance above the bit rings, are couplings D and D, to which are secured the straps E and the coupling and has; near the center, a cross piece E having two downwardly projecting supports G and G to which are secured the disks H and H, coupled together by the link h.

The parts comprising the supports G, G, H and H, together with the link h, constitute what I shall term a muzzle, and are clearly illustrated in Fig. 3. The muzzle consists of a thin sheet of metal, preferably made of steel and covered with leather, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, the parts G and G serving as The strap E is firmly secured in recesses in structed and away from the nose of the animal. When however, a horse becomes unmanageable the disks H and H, which may be padded on the inside with any soft material, are drawn in closely over the nostrils by the reins I and I which are coupled to the side of the disks H and H and pass through ringsb and b on the outer ends of the bit.

It is well known that by closing a horses nostrils while running or racing about with fright the latter may be quickly brought to a halt by the above operation.

Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a safety rein, in combination with the bridle, comprising the side straps, on and a, the head straps, a and a and neck strap a, the straps, E and F, the former carrying spring supports, G and G, to which are socured the disks, H and H, a coupling link, h, for uniting said disks, reins, I and I, for operating said disks against the action of said spring supports, substantially as specified.

2. In a safety rein, in combination with the bridle, comprising the side straps, a and a, the head straps, a and a and neck strap, a
